New PlayStation Store Impressions!

New PlayStation Store Impressions! 300°
359w ago - PlayStation Store. Lets face it, it would have been difficult for them to make a crappier looking/functioning store, but I think we all hoped for something fantastic.

I don't know if I would call the new store fantastic, but it is a massive improvement. Navigating the store with the D-Pad is now quite easy, but the biggest improvement in my opinion is the way its actually set out.

There are now categories that are easy to get to, including All Games, Game Add-Ons, Videos, PSP Games, etc.

Unfortunately there seems to be some problems with thumbnail images loading in, but I a sure that'll be fixed.

All in all, its a step in the right direction. Now... how about that in-game XMB? Or perhaps some Home?

Lite-On DH-401S can read Sony PS3 game discs!

Lite-On DH-401S can read Sony PS3 game discs! 300°
359w ago - We received this tip via e-mail today: Jan70 (an Administrator) of CDFreaks.com has reported that the Lite-On DH-401S drive can read Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) game discs!

Sure, we've been dumping PS3 images since 6 days after the U.S. launch HERE, however, the big difference is that now users won't have to do it through Linux nor via PS3 SAK anymore... providing they own a Lite-On DH-401S drive.

Of course this doesn't mean they are playable on retail PS3 consoles though (like Linux/SAK image dumps, the PS3 sees the media as a data disc instead of a game disc).

VERY nice find Jan70, and below are a few screenshots and a directory layout for Lost Planet!

Volume in drive N is LOSTPLANET
Volume Serial Number is F29E-03F1

Directory of N:

Has Sony Europe messed things up yet again?!

Has Sony Europe messed things up yet again?! 250°
359w ago - So, we got the new PS Store today... in short, it's lovely. From the little 'plinky' piano sound when it opens, to the nice fading page animations - it's a joy to navigate.

However, while navigating is a joy, Sony Europe have made their usual hash of things - their categorization completely sucks.

On the UK store the main categories are:

Latest
All Games
Game Add-Ons
Videos
PSP Games
Family Games
'other' media (what?!)
We recommend

This is just crazy... so if you're looking for a demo, you need to either go to latest, or if it's not there, look in all games - which are sorted into sub groups by genre, not title. Also, all PSOne games are mixed in with the genres... so if you want a PSone game you need to find it in the melange of other titles... is Sony Europe bonkers?

On the USA store:

New Releases
Downloadable Games
View All by Title
Add-ons
Demos
Videos
Themes and Wallpapers
Featured Items

These categories make perfect sense - you can find the same piece of content multiple ways, and if you go to 'downloadable games' the titles are split by platform (PS3, PSP, PS Eye, PSone Classics) and other sorting (top downloads, genre, alphabetical)......

What the heck is going on with the console war?

What the heck is going on with the console war? 100°
359w ago - What's the deal with Microsoft losing the entire first quarter of 2008's hardware sales to the PS3 and Wii while not really seeming to give care? Is it all show (the not caring part) or what?

Maybe I should start taking bets for what Microsoft's "official" reason will be this time. They've already used up "underestimated demand" and "production capacity issues". My money's going on "Who cares about March anyway?! March is a stupid doo-doo month!"

In anticipation of Thursday's official release of the NPD sales numbers, analysts are predicting that Sony outdid Microsoft for March. I'm not sure about you, but I was getting used to seeing Xbox 360 sales as the metric people really watched, while Wii sales were a never-ending fluke we expected to crash at any moment and the PS3 was the little system that (never) could.

When the PS3 outsold the 360 the first time, we all agreed... it was a fluke. Then it happened again, but that was okay since it was sort of a mistake on Microsoft's part combined with another fluke success on Sony's part. Now, we're approaching official confirmation of the third time (in a row no less,) suggesting this is edging toward an actual "trend" with the monthly order of hardware sales repeatedly coming in Wii>PS3>360. Maybe someone...

Exclusive Haze demo coming to PSN early May 50°
359w ago - Ubisoft today announced the imminent release of a fully playable demo for Haze, the new first-person shooter set in a harsh future where war is never quite what it seems.

Coming exclusively to the PLAYSTATION Network in early May, this playable demo will give gamers a taste of not only the single-player campaign in Haze, but will also allow up to four-player, drop-in drop-out co-op play online.

Developed by shooter experts Free Radical, creators of the critically acclaimed TimeSplitters series, Haze is scheduled for release exclusively on the PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system on May 20th 2008.
