Touchscreen VAIOs for Fall, PlayStation Network Support Coming

Touchscreen VAIOs for Fall, PlayStation Network Support Coming 50°
293w ago - According ot a recent interview with Mike Abary, the company's senior vice-president, they have some new Sony VAIO laptops in the works.

These new notebooks will be ready for market as early as this fall and the plan is to equip them with touchscreen displays.

It's unclear whether they will take on the full convertible tablet PC configuration or if they will just be regular laptops with touchscreens, but you'll be tapping on that display in a few short months.

To quote: Perhaps even more interesting is that Sony plans on integrating the PlayStation Network into the Sony VAIO line.

Using the PSN, gamers are able to download a variety of gaming and entertainment content on the PS3 and PSP, so it's natural to extend this service to the PC market as well.

Abary says the initial focus for the VAIO PSN will be on movies and TV shows, but casual games may also find their way in there as well. Integration with Sony e-book reader devices may also be in the works.

Pachter: XBox 360 Will Fall to Third Place Thanks to Japan

Pachter: XBox 360 Will Fall to Third Place Thanks to Japan 200°
296w ago - As part of an absolutely massive 210-page report from Wedbush Morgan Securities on the future of the video game industry, analyst Michael Pachter has predicted that Japan will be the Achilles heel for Microsoft, enabling Sony's PS3 to overtake Xbox 360 on the global market.

Wii, however, will maintain its leadership role until the end (with a little help from a new "Wii HD").

To quote: "We expect the dominant console at the end of the this cycle to be the Wii, as we think that the console's low price point, innovative control mechanism, and compatibility with standard definition televisions will provide it with a competitive advantage over the next two years.

We expect Nintendo to sustain this competitive advantage by introducing a high definition version of the Wii, perhaps as early as the end of 2010, in order to convert its large installed base into true 'next generation' households," Pachter said.

"We think that the PS3 will capture significant market share, primarily due to Sony's victory in the high definition DVD format war, and will end up in second place by 2015.

Although Microsoft's Xbox 360 enjoyed a first mover advantage, we think that its market position will fade to third place due to lack of penetration in Japan."

Industry Mole Says PS3 & XBox 360 Price Drops Coming This Fall

Industry Mole Says PS3 & XBox 360 Price Drops Coming This Fall 500°
297w ago - According to Arstechnica's favorite inside source, a price drop is coming to both the Sony PS3 and Microsoft XBox 360 consoles this fall.

To quote: Since we can't name the source, we're treating all this information as rumor, but the Mole's reputation in the industry for breaking large stories and outstanding track record for accuracy speaks for itself.

The 80GB model is going to see some serious hardware constraints in the weeks ahead, and retailers have about 60 days worth of inventory before the systems will become hard to find. Expect to see many more 160GB units on store shelves.

Those units have no constraints yet, but if the retailers sell through that supply as quickly as they did the 80GB, Sony is in a good place for the final part of its plan in 2009: dropping the price of hardware and launching the PS3 Slim in the fall.

Expect the Xbox 360 Pro to disappear in July or August, but you're going to see some solid bundles to get those systems moving off store shelves. The Halo 3/Fable 2 bundle the Mole previously tipped us off to shows that Microsoft is willing to put some good games into the box to get people buying.

So what are we going to do without...

Alleged PS3 Slim Details Leaked, Forecasted to Arrive This Fall

Alleged PS3 Slim Details Leaked, Forecasted to Arrive This Fall 650°
297w ago - It is real. As previously reported, according to Super_Secret the 'PS3 Slim' is a PS3 that's been cut down as much as physically possible without preventing the loss of playback of any existing PS3 title out there.

It still has Blu-ray, it still has wireless, it still has bluetooth and it still has gigabit ethernet. "OtherOS" support has been removed.
You still get 2 USB ports.

Hard drive sizes will be bigger, it will come in 120Gb and 250Gb flavors. It's still replaceable and will actually be slightly easier as it has been relocated to the front of the console.

It will NOT have any "new" features, such as backwards compatibility or enhanced peripheral support. It's just a PS3, but slightly smaller and cheaper. The power supply is still internal, but a different power cable will be used.

Rear ports are still the same: 1x HDMI, 1x Sony AV port, 1x Optical, 1x Ethernet. And of course a power port. Release date and official announcement are not final.

Price is undetermined, but make no mistake, this is a "slimmed" PS3 in every sense of the word. It's as cheap as can possibly be, so expect it to launch with a smaller price tag than what you're paying...
