20% of iPhones in France unlocked 50°
390w ago - Mobile phone company Orange has said 20% of customers who have bought iPhones from it in France have opted for unlocked ones. Orange sold the popular Apple product for 399 euros (£288) with a two-year contract, or 749 euros without one.

Elsewhere, mobile companies only sell iPhones to customers who take out network contracts with them. Orange sold 30,000 iPhones in the first five days, 20% of which were unlocked so they could be used on any network.

Orange says that 48% of people buying the phones were new customers for the network.

Source: Hudson Lays Off Half of US Staff 50°
391w ago - Next-Gen has learned that Redwood Shores-based Hudson Entertainment has laid off approximately half of its workforce.

All of the layoffs occurred within the company's mobile division this morning, according to a source who wished to remain anonymous.

"Their mobile division has not been profitable for about the last year-and-a-half or so," the source said. "They've just been having a lot of trouble getting their games onto big carriers like Verizon and Cingular. It's a very competitive market place."

He pegged Hudson Entertainment's workforce at around 50-70...

PS3 Phone Features Microsoft Operating System & Plays Nintendo Games 50°
392w ago - That's right folks, wrap your minds around this – a phone that features Playstation buttons, has a Microsoft Windows operating system, and plays Nintendo games. Confused yet? How about the fact that the phone was made in "Koera" – No, that's not a typo, that's what is printed on the phone.

Sound to good to be true? That's because it is. The Chinese made phone is very much illegal, and will probably never make it across the ocean. Even still, one can't help but wonder what a phone with multiple emulators would be like. After doing a little research, I came up with...

T-Mobile to open up iPhone sales 50°
392w ago - T-Mobile is to start allowing German customers to buy Apple's iPhone without a contract to its network, as it moves to comply with a court injunction.

Its announcement comes after rival Vodafone went to a German court to challenge T-Mobile's exclusive tie-up with the iPhone in Germany.

T-Mobile will now sell people just the handset for 999 euros ($1,477; £719).

This is a significant premium over the 399-euro price for those who also take out a two-year T-Mobile contract.

Mobile game in sex and drugs shame! 50°
393w ago - Is the Coolest Girl in School also the naughtiest?

If you want to sell lots of copies of a game, try to anger some loudmouthed family campaigners. That's the rule of thumb in the console industry, where shrill media scare often equals big sales.

We haven't seen the same thing happen in mobile yet (although that may change if a publisher takes a punt on our Crack-Fueled Illegal Immigrant House-Price-Collapse puzzle game - the Daily Mail won't be able to resist).

It's kicking off Down Under though, thanks to a game called Coolest Girl in School. The Family...

Google pushes into mobile phones 50°
395w ago - Google has unveiled software it hopes will power a variety of future mobile phones and boost the web on the move.

The software could lead to cheaper phones as it is designed to speed up the process of making mobile services.

The firm is working with four mobile manufacturers - Samsung, HTC, Motorola and LG - but a Google branded phone was not announced.

The first phones using the so-called Google "software stack" will be available in the second half of 2008.

"This is going to bring the internet into cell phones in a very cool way," Andy Rubin,...

Gaming Deals of the Week 50°
395w ago - Are you a Canadian who was looking to purchase a new 40 GB PS3, but are little tight in the wallet from days spent on beer or women? Well look no further, because Dell is offering the console for $399.99. You must be reading this thinking "Where's the deal, isn't that the original price?"

Dell is offering it at that price, but it also includes Spider-Man 3 on Blu-Ray, Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (check out our review) and a Startech 6 ft. HDMI cable. Original price, yes, but it does come with the free game, movie, and cable- and you can't beat that.
