850°
216w ago - Update: KaKaRoToKS has now confirmed that the PS3 3.55 downgrade is no longer possible, tweeting the following: "sad news.. downgrade worked, but not reliable, only works with one of Xtse's ps3s, but can't reproduce it.. I'm going to look for another way. nope, it only works on one machine, even if same model, it doesn't work on it. No idea what's different about it..."

Today KaKaRoToKS has confirmed via Twitter news of PS3 downgrade success from version 3.55 to 3.41 PlayStation 3 Firmware.

This confirmation comes just days since his PS3 Custom Firmware surfaced and under a month after the PSGrade free PS3 Downgrading hex codes arrived for version 3.5 and below consoles, followed by Sony revoking lv2diag.self file_1 and patching PS3 downgrading in the PS3 Firmware 3.55 update.

Here is his Tweet, to quote: "First downgrade from 3.55 to 3.41 successful, Thanks to Xtse! Method not yet ready for the masses...

Video: Standalone Linux on PS3 Slim 27C3 Fail0verflow Demo

650°
216w ago - Today PlayStation 3 hacking group Fail0verflow has tweeted news of a Standalone Linux PS3 Slim 27C3 Fail0verflow demo that Marcan42 wanted to show off during this year's 27C3 but couldn't due to the video not working.

From the video's caption, to quote: "This is what the fail0verflow 27c3 demo *should* have looked like. As it turns out, the reason why we didn't have working video and had to fall back to an SSH demo was because this Slim is too new to run version 3.15 (what we tried to run), since it does not correctly support this particular revision of the RSX. So here's the same demo, except with version 3.41, which does work."

For those who missed it, pytey of Fail0verflow was also recently interviewed by the BBC.

The video can be seen below, and here are some related Fail0verflow tweets:

400°
216w ago - Today Sdw has released a WIP version of PS3Vecx, a Vectrex PS3 emulator for the PlayStation 3 GameOS.

Download: PS3Vecx v0.5 Vectrex PS3 Emulator WIP

From the PS3Vecx ReadMe file: This is a port of the Vectrex emulator "vecx", by Valavan Manohararajah. Done using the PSL1GHT open SDK.

Navigate the menus with d-pad, cross to select.

In game:

D-pad : Vectrex Joystick
Square : Vectrex button 1
Triangle : Vectrex button 2
Cross : Vectrex button 3
Circle : Vectrex button 4
Start : Pause menu

Since I couldn't get directory browsing working in PSL1GHT, I precompiled the emulator with a selection of old calssic and new homebrew ROMs.

This is an early version, there is no sound support and probably some other bugs as well.

Sony on Recent PS3 Hacks, PSN Security Updates Incoming

800°
216w ago - Today Sony has finally spoken out against the recent PS3 Hacks stating they plan to fix the security breaches through a series of PlayStation Network updates including fraudulently unlocked PS3 Trophies.

To quote from ComputerAndVideoGames.com (linked above): "Earlier this week, hackers completely tore apart the console's few remaining lines of defence against running unauthorised code, and subsequently released the first custom PS3 firmware.

Sony has remained quiet on the issue until now, having just told our friends at Edge: "We are aware of this, and are currently looking into it. We will fix the issues through network updates, but because this is a security issue, we are not able to provide you with any more details."

Hacking groups don't believe this will be possible though, telling the BBC: The complete console is compromised...

PSP / PS3 PKG Decrypter and Extractor v.1.0.0.0 is Released

700°
216w ago - Today Mathieulh has released a PSP / PS3 PKG Decrypter and Extractor v.1.0.0.0 for decrypting and extracting PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable and mixed game package files via PC.

Download: PSP / PS3 PKG Decrypter and Extractor v.1.0.0.0 / PSP / PS3 PKG Decrypter and Extractor v.1.0.0.1 by daGraveR / PS3Tools

To quote from the ReadMe/Twitter: btw if you don't want to mess with the whole packages algo stuff, just use AES CTR with the package key iv at 0x70 in the package. Sorry I forgot to include the readme in the fixed release, this is now fixed as well. btw that hmac key was fail, don't use it, another is actually used.

It's not really signed, just encrypted with AES and HMAC. woops I forgot to enable the button when I cleaned up the app (yeah I fail, gonna do a small re-release xD) btw I forgot to mention in the readme this is not the 1:1 algorithm, it's been improved, it extracts pkgs roughly 3 times as fast as on ps3.
