Apple Market Share Continues to Climb, Windows Drops 100°
February 2, 2009 // 9:49 pm - They are not dramatic changes, but they are steady and heartening to the Apple universe of users and developers. The trend continues from December numbers, and for Apple, all the trends are good.

Net Applications, a company that tracks operating system and market share by looking at results from search engines, reports that Apple has a 9.93% share of OS users for January of 2009, up from 9.63% the previous month.

Windows OS market share measured 88.26% in January, dropping slightly from...

Why the Windows 7 Taskbar Beats Mac OS X's Dock 300°
January 22, 2009 // 4:33 am - Yeah, I said it. The Windows 7 taskbar is the most important Windows UI change since Windows 95, and it will dramatically change the way you use Windows. And it's better than the Mac's Dock.

That's because the "superbar" -as the taskbar is known by developers- jerks taskbar functionality in a new direction. It's no longer merely a window manager.. just a place to manage open windows and by proxy, open applications. It's now a bona fide application launcher.

More than that, it blends the two in ways that will remind many of the OS X Dock-apps that are running and those...

Gizmodo Receives First Windows 7 BSOD, Windows 8 Anyone? 350°
January 12, 2009 // 10:52 pm - We've been fiddling around with the Windows 7 Beta for a few days, but just now finally run into that old friend of Windows users: the blue screen of death.

It's good to see that Microsoft hasn't bothered to change the old Windows blue screen; and by good, we mean bad.

Isn't it about time to fail a little bit more gracefully? Or at the very least, in a way that actually makes sense to end-users?

The error throws up the driver that caused it (way at the bottom of the error) before automatically rebooting, but actually identifying it via which type of component...

Microsoft's Horrible Windows 7 Dilemma 400°
January 11, 2009 // 9:33 pm - It's not a Windows Vista killer - Windows Vista fulfils that role quite well enough, thank you. But it's hard to know how excited Microsoft itself is about Windows 7.

Show it too much love, and it's effectively agreeing with everyone who hates Vista - and sometimes it feels like that really is everyone.

So Microsoft is keeping Windows 7 at a distance, and not saying that much about it at all - or perhaps just enough to stop its users going on and on about how much they love Windows XP.

A nice counterpoint is Apple, which actually does get excited about new...

The Truth: Separating Facts from Rumors on Windows 7 50°
December 13, 2008 // 11:45 pm - Microsoft has been developing Windows 7 under a shroud of secrecy worthy of Apple, and it's led to a rash of rumors and unfounded expectations.

So let us state for the record: Windows 7 doesn't have a new kernel, it doesn't run in the cloud and it's not based on Midori (a research project focused on writing an OS in managed code).

In fact, Windows 7 uses the same driver model as Vista - and even refers to itself as version 6.1. We've got our hands on the Milestone Three (M3) pre-beta release of Windows 7, so read on to find out exactly what to expect from Microsoft's...

Microsoft Updates Games for Windows Live Client Interface 100°
November 13, 2008 // 1:22 am - With all the attention being paid to the vaunted New Xbox Experience interface that will launch later this month for the Xbox 360, Microsoft quietly updated the Games for Windows - Live client today.

The update doesn't introduce any new functionality, that is planned later on with the release of a desktop client as well as the Games for Windows - Live Marketplace. However, the update does give the GFW - Live client a whole new look that's better suited for PCs.

The previous GFW - Live client didn't make much use of the bigger displays and higher resolutions that many...

Top 10 Things to Look Forward to in Microsoft's Windows 7 50°
November 10, 2008 // 8:40 pm - Rumor has it that Windows 7 will drop in the middle of next year, but last month Microsoft released a "preview" tester build of Windows 7. After living in the Windows 7 Preview for a week now, several features and niceties jumped out at me which promise to make Windows a better place to work come 2009.

Here are just a few of the things to look forward to in Windows 7.

10. Ding-dong, the Sidebar is dead.

One of the first things I hunted down and killed in Windows Vista was the Sidebar, which loaded by default and docked Vista's Gadgets to the right side of...
