Facebook sees decline in users 50°
February 21, 2008 // 4:29 pm - Social networking site Facebook has seen its first drop in UK users in January, new industry data indicates.

Users fell 5% to 8.5 million in January from 8.9 million in December, according to data from Nielsen Online.

This was the first drop in user numbers since July 2006 when Nielsen began compiling data on the site.

Nic Howell, deputy editor of industry magazine New Media Age, said the site was no longer as popular among its core audience of young people.

Young warned over social websites 50°
November 23, 2007 // 4:05 am - Millions of young people could damage their future careers with the details about themselves they post on social networking websites, a watchdog warns.

The Information Commissioner's Office found more than half of those asked made most of their information public.

Some 71% of 2,000 14 to 21-year-olds said they would not want colleges or employers to do a web search on them before they had removed some material.

The commission said the young needed to be aware of their electronic footprint.

MySpace casts unknown film stars 50°
October 29, 2007 // 3:58 pm - Ten internet users have landed film roles after they auditioned on the social networking site MySpace.

Readers of the website chose the movie's director and several of the actors after producers asked people to participate in the auditions.

The unknowns, who include a student and an aerospace engineer, star alongside actors Paul Nicholls and Tim Healy.

Faintheart, billed as a romantic comedy, is due to be released by the summer of 2008.

Abuse fight targets social sites 50°
October 22, 2007 // 4:36 pm - Social networking sites are being urged to do more to protect young people.

The Child Exploitation and Online Protection centre (CEOP) wants the sites to install its "report abuse" button that connects people to police.

CEOP research shows some sex offenders are starting to use social network sites, such as MySpace, Bebo and Facebook, to seek out victims.

Jim Gamble, head of CEOP, says: "The more children go on social networks, the more offenders follow them."
