Rumor: Intel Will Design the Sony PlayStation 4 GPU? 400°
February 6, 2009 // 11:05 pm - TheInquirer (linked above) claims to have been informed by a Sony Rep at CES that Intel bought the win, and will design the PlayStation 4 GPU. Until confirmation directly from Sony is available we'll label this as a rumor, but to quote:

The nice Sony engineering lady at CES told us that Intel essentially bought the win, a theoretically good architecture, no imminent threats of going bust, and not being hated by Sony all contributed too.

With a couple of deliverables satisfied, the PS4 GPU belongs to Intel. No word if this is going to be the entire architecture, CPU as...

GPU Ray Tracing: New Pictures Reveal Current Possibilities 50°
September 29, 2008 // 11:22 pm - It is commonly known that Nvidia showed a Bugatti Veyron at the Full HD resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 running a 30 fps - inclusive anti aliasing and the multiple refractions common in ray tracing.

Unfortunately this requires a Quadro-Plex 2100 D4 with four G92 based GPUs to be calculated.

Now there is additional material available in an Nvidia presentation. Here not only pure ray tracing is introduced, but also examples for Hybrid rendering, like mixing rasterisation and ray tracing.

The developers of the Nvidia demo themselves say that both systems...

New 80GB PS3 provides minimal power savings, 65nm RSX GPU 50°
August 24, 2008 // 6:26 am - Last we heard, it was still up in the air somewhat as to whether upcoming PlayStation 3 consoles would house the elusive 65-nanometer RSX graphics processor.

According to couch21, a curious buyer of Sony's newest 80GB unit, there is a smidgen of data that hints at a 65nm chip actually being under the hood. By using the oh-so-scientific Kill-A-Watt, he discovered that his older 40GB PS3 sucked down 125.8-watts when idle, while the fresh 80GB edition ate up just 111.9-watts.

The findings were...

Opinion: Is the GPU holding the PS3 back? 350°
June 10, 2008 // 6:11 pm - Self-proclaimed veteran games industry marketer, Bruce Everiss, believes Sony's GPU is holding back the console and that it has made it a less powerful gaming machine than the Xbox 360.

Everiss uses a quote from Richard Huddy of ATI to back up the claim: "I think Xbox 360 technology is likely to outperform PlayStation 3 technology by a pretty healthy margin in the long run. It looks like the GPU is holding the PS3 back."

To quote: For the PS3 Sony wanted to have a technology advantage so they developed, in conjunction with Toshiba and IBM, the Cell...

PS3 GPU Use in Linux Video available! 50°
December 1, 2007 // 8:28 pm - CNLohr shared this video of the recent PS3 Linux 3D Graphics access progress. This is an example of code running on Linux, under the hypervisor talking to the Nvidia RSX (video card) on the PlayStation 3. This is done entirely without proprietary drivers.

Shown is 3 animated quads, drawn in immediate mode as well as a series of triangles in the background drawn using an index buffer. This demo is a modified version of IronPeter's libps3rsx running via patched 2.6.24 experimental, unofficial kernel on Gentoo Linux.
