December 9, 2010 // 9:00 pm - Recently we reported on a 3.50 Firmware JailBroken PS3 x3Max video, and today PS3 developer xorloser has commented on the hack, as well as explaining why obtaining the hmac key for PlayStation 3 PUP files will not lead to PS3 Custom Firmware.

To quote from his blog, linked above:

"the hmac key for PUPs doesnt magically allow custom firmware. this is because all of the files that make up the PUP are signed anyway, so you cannot make custom versions of any of those files because you cannot sign them.

as for x3max supposedly working on v3.50, i call fake."

when you spoofing your PS3 to FW3.50 it will show FW.3.50 in system information, even if you are on 3.41...

I'll need to get a copy of GT5, back it up, and run the backup.

Sounds like a permanent spoofing situation that would allow games that are able to be edited to 3.41 to run, but not the new tight as a drum ones a la gt5. Is it possible for you to try a 3.50 game that has not been edited, though its very unlikely that gt5 would work, as you have not at any time actually upgraded to 3.50.

Yep, after several reboots, the "System Information" still shows my Firmware version is 3.50. I think I am running a 3.41 firmware (installed during the HD upgrade) with a "3.50" version value. Strange.

I encountered a weird situation. Here is what I did:

1. 3.41 PS3-slim that has more than 300GB backup games installed on a 500GB HD.
2. Backup the HD to a 750GB HD.
3. Installed a new 750GB HD.
4. Restored the backup to the new 750GB HD.
5. The restore took more than 20 hours and hanged at 97% complete.
6. Aborted the restore operation.
7. System hangs if my JB dongle is attached.
8. Re-formatted the HD.
9. JB dongle works.
.... BUT
10. My system stetting shows I am running 3.50 firmware (and JB woks fine).

P.S. Firmware update is disabled.

I did modified some backup games to run as version 3.5.

I wonder if this will start a trend of releasing new dongles just to break a new firmware. There's already too many clones to count -- all it's gonna take is one sale to the right person and everyone will have it anyway.

Perhaps the future of these companies is to charge to provide custom firmware for your clone as they develop new solutions. It's not like the dongle design changes for a new hex or anything.
