265w ago - Here is a video demoing my "custom firmware". I would have added something showing off the new features of 3.21, but oh wait, there aren't any.

This can be installed without having to open up your PS3, just by restoring a custom generated PUP file.

It's possible this CFW will also work on the slim to actually *enable* OtherOS; I'll know when my infectus gets here.

No release date yet, use the proxy hack to play online with 3.15

Note to the people who removed OtherOS, you are potentially turning 100000+ legit users into "hackers."

The only way to cover up this hole is removing otherOS. BECAUSE geo's exploit isn't software based, it's hardware based it's a memory bug you know? unless they either remove otherOS or return every ps3 in the market open it and change it lol and that would be impossible of course... I'm not defending them!

what they did is considered illegal in some countries, but it was a stupid move anyway because why bothering? when in reality a gameOS hack isn't really that impossible, who needs the otherOS when he already dumped the gameOS?

Well my friend, let me kindly ask you. Do you know the Twilight Hack used on WII ?

If something similar shows up on PS3, let's imagine an exploit that runs using god of war 3 first boss posseidon (just an exemple) $ony can disable this game that I bought to be played ? Or even better does the company can disable my blu-ray player ?

There is a good way to prevent piracy in the console, prevent it from powering on. Isn't that a very good idea ?

And thank god there are people like aries2k6 that think a little further over the problem.

I have noticed something about Geohot's post about 3.21OO... He said you have to stay on 3.15, but shouldn't you be able to just reinstall a new current version? On recovery mode it says "With a firmware 3.15 or higher" so shouldn't you be able to flash a 3.21 on a 3.21 system?

Although the EULA might be a legally binding agreement it does not supercede the Laws of a country. So even though it says they have the right to do ALL to protect themselves from piracy, it does not give them the right to break the law to protect themselves from piracy.

After all when Sony placed a rootkit on their CDs, it was to protect themselves from piracy. Unfortunately that violated consumers rights and was found to be illegal. The rootkit is just an example, the removal of the otheros is another matter but we'll find out if it's illegal or not through the court cases that have been filed against Sony.

Personally I hope they lose. I think, we the consumers, should have some rights also. What piracy?? as of now there is none. the Slim never had the otheros so all the consoles that are in retail are exploit/Piracy proof. So Sony is doing a preemptive-retroactive strike on my PS3?

Total BS in my opinion. Plus just because Sony said they removed it because of piracy doesn't mean they're telling the whole truth. they have been known to lie or omit the truth before.

To my point of view, this is totally illegal.

You buy the game, you buy the console, that should be enough for you to play it. It has been like this for almost 20-25 years.
In the past you would go to a store, buy a NES game and the console them there you go the game is on your tv.

Now you can only play the game if you agree with $ony ? Ok, I don't agree so take off my online game play, but my offline mode ?

If in the next upgrade $ony states that you need to play with your pants down with a $ony logo sticked in your ass you will have to do that ?

I've agreed to the past user agreement and when I bought the ps3 it said that I would be able to play ps3 games that's the main purpose of this black box. So what about it now ?

Somebody need to buy Red Dead Redemption and sue $ony.

i was thinking about the actual situation. since geohot was able to sign his own firmware update. i'm not 100% sure, but i think its completly unnaccessary to stay on 3.10-3.15.

because if there will be a custom firmware, it will be signed with the original sony key. so the console will think its a normal update.

so you only have to take the number of the newest firmware, and put it in your new custom firmware to let the console update to this firmware.

am i wrong with that theory?

ok this is what i have done.. have a look on ebay for a faulty ps3 one that says lazer is broken or drive is broken and make sure rest of it works then you can use that for online but will not cost a packet.

I was just thinking if Geohot really did load a SPE if he did it based on a injection from otherOS, or if he figured out what we are coming up on publicly and made some dump program in a signed PUP?

Also if he didn't just edit the unsigned part of firmware to make this video then he must of reversed their binaries really fast, and he has no trace analysis does he? Can IDA trace Cell RISC? I guess he could of wrote a plugin for the extensions... but still.

In any case, if there is no injections able from otherOS lpar then I guess building custom PUP based on patched-reversed firmware binaries is the next logical step. His claim that he verified the SPE isolation is pretty far fetched unless he made an assumption based on some routines he found..

I merged your thread to this existing one where this topic is being discussed. If you read the last few pages you will find the general consensus is those who want to play online (or games that require Firmware above 3.15) tend to update, while those who don't are waiting it out... so it's personal preference really, based on what you do with your PS3.
