September 27, 2010 // 9:07 pm - Today garyopa at (linked above) reports that Sony appears to be targeting the PS JailBreak, PSFreedom and PSGroove related PS3 hacks and has shared numerous court documents for those interested.

From one of the documents, to quote: "Similarly targeted document subpoenas or deposition notices to any other third party who SCEA learns may be involved in the distribution or sale of the PS Jailbreak software, known as, for example, PSGroove, OpenPSJailbreak, and PSFreedom, or who may have knowledge of the distribution or sale of this illicit software."

PS3 hacker Mathieulh is also mentioned in one of the documents as recently proclaiming to be one of 20 individuals behind PSGroove, to quote: "Mathieu Hervais told BBC News he was one of about 20 hackers involved in PSGroove's development."

Just under a month ago Sony was granted an injunction by Australian Courts on the sale of PSJailBreak PS3 modchips, followed by blocking PS JailBreak and PS3 proxy methods with the release of the PS3 Firmware 3.42 update, so only time will tell what their next move is.

Imho i don't see how Sony uses an jig that emulates a 6 port USB hub.

"By attaching and detaching fake devices to the ports of the hub the dongle has control over the mallocing and freeing of various blocks of memory that hold the device and configuration descriptors, exploit is a Heap Overflow attack. The exploit carefully manipulates the heap by plugging and unplugging fake usb devices with large device descriptors until the device on port 4 which misreports its size to overwrite one of malloc's boundary tags."

well quick explained something like that, that would just be wierd, they do have a jig, but i assume it wouldn't emulate a hub in that way, it would just respond to a challange or something.

but well i'm just guessing but why would they use any kinda attack on their own system

if you guys do some reading on the judges decision to allow iphone jailbreaking, it very well could apply to the ps3 JB...

piracy aside - the jailbreak has legit uses. and the decision of the iphone jb lawsuit/judgement is very similar to the use of ps3 jb methods.

i'm hoping for xbmc on ps3 asap.. with BR support!

hate to burst your bubble, but from the research i've done, jailbreaking is only legal on iPhones, and the ruling doesnt cover PS3's.
That being said, i hate $ony for this. This isnt a challenge, but can someone prove me wrong? am i being nieve?

i guess the main question if it gets to trial, is how the makers of PSJB came to acquire the 'stolen tech'. If a $ony dev took it and sold it, without telling the buyer where he got it from, then I don't think $ony can legally get the sellers and developers to stop production/sales because there hasn't been any wrong doing on the parts of the devs, just the thief at $ony... But that's if the jig came from sony and not some guy who figured it out.

why oh why do the americans always bring up hitler and the war as their responce to any one british that they disagree with? its the reason I dont care that I cant go on the PSN to play games, every time I used to go on COD I would have some little kid telling me that america came and saved us from Hitler (have to remind them that as allies it was something they should have done from the start and thus have prevented what turned out to be a huge waste of way too many lives)

The only reason the US of A finally came to our side was that they got their noses bloodied by Germanys Allies the Japannese. Thats enough history the future of America looks a bit grim at the moment as the goverments that you say are their for you and are removable by election etc are all run by members of the illuminati/new world order (look it up its a scary proposition)

thats enough rants, god bless the united world of sony hatters not united kingdom or united states lol.

I thought the whole idea of PS Groove was that is a was an Open Source alternative that can run on a USB Dev Flash unit? That was there is no Sony Code involved and users can download and develop freely. I might be wrong, and maybe its based on leaked Sony code/hardware but if not then I don't see how a court could side in their favor. (Well I could see how since money makes the world go 'round)

I'm glad you live there too... stay there and stay out of our business... we will keep your government intact for you as we have since world war 2... these weapons you fear are what ensures that we are a nation of by and for the people... let them, the government officials, get out of hand and we can change things.

You on the other hand will do what you are told, despite what you would like to believe... kitchen knives don't make soldiers shutter in fear, 1000 well armed men who are better at using their weaponry they you are at yours does... i can hit a target less then four inches from a thousand yards and not make a sound doing it (even suppressing the sound and mussel flash)... i can live without a grocery indefinitely... i need only my sidearm my rifle and my shotgun... i can make my own powder and my own projectiles... don't bash my country and i won't remind you that Hitler made you and yours his...

unfortunately, they do have a legal leg to stand on here... this is all from stolen tech... however things are what they are and pandora cannot put chaos back into the box... glad things are out... just sucks the way it happened... social engineering is hacking BTW... but legal action can be taken against it...

OtherOS and 3rd party USB support.

problem is that it all comes from PSJAILBREAK... this is stolen tech from sony... they have the ABSOLUTE right to sue... any ports and modes that came after this and from this are thus considered stolen property... intellectual property is a pain to deal with in court... but sony will win the problem for them is that the cat's out of the bag... as long as the dev's for PSGroove didn't dump PSJAILBREAK they are fine... if they just did a bunch of tests and basically figured out a way to make it do the same thing all is well... i doubt that is what happened though.

Yeah, I feel the same way. I almost want to do a 4chan type gathering and get people to Stand Up to Sony any way possible. All they try to do is bully the little guys while not caring about stepping on their regular users in the way of their march to destroy homebrew. Sony is now worse then Apple and M$ combined, lol.

jail-breaking is... but the way we are doing it is from a stolen tech that has a load of copyrights and whatnot protecting it... still Pandora opened the box... wonder what got out!

the JIG was stolen tech... so anything formed from it is basically as bad as using the stolen tech itself... sad but true

and you need to realize that other OS was taken away because some douche stole something... it all comes down to ppl takin things and not FINDING it for themselves... don't get me wrong, social engineering is the real source of almost all hacks... but it leaves you legally open to getting your butt kicked...

Well, I live in America (the united states thereof) and am damn glad to have my firearms, because they alone are the reason I CAN MAKE backups of my own games... the laws are of, by, and for the people... and the only thing we have to keep that in check is the ability to make ppl who want us to stop doing what is fair and right think twice about stopping us... the fact that i have a 12 gauge double barrel with double aught buck sitting right next to my chair is my insurance policy, what's yours???

so if anyone bursts in my front door illegally i will make them very unhappy boys... that with the sks makes the government think twice about being dicks to individuals... look at what happened at ruby ridge... they had to get tanks to take out a family of 5 and one of their friends... (that is the mentality of ppl like you, 'we need to get those evil guns at all costs')

i am just happy that i live in a country where guns are allowed so that i, as part of the government, cannot be easily suppressed and voice my and opinion can and will be heard... now go back to your third world country and wait for the next food supply of our money that influxes into your piss-ant town and be thankful that, even as messed up as we are, we take care of all your bs for you... you don't need guns because we bleed for you... enjoy your servitude...

btw DMCA rulings have already dealt with all this, the reason Sony has a leg to stand on is because this is all based off STOLEN TECH!!! have a nice day and don't insult my nation and i won't mention how your nation is a sorry EU nation that owes mine its existence...
