September 27, 2010 // 9:07 pm - Today garyopa at (linked above) reports that Sony appears to be targeting the PS JailBreak, PSFreedom and PSGroove related PS3 hacks and has shared numerous court documents for those interested.

From one of the documents, to quote: "Similarly targeted document subpoenas or deposition notices to any other third party who SCEA learns may be involved in the distribution or sale of the PS Jailbreak software, known as, for example, PSGroove, OpenPSJailbreak, and PSFreedom, or who may have knowledge of the distribution or sale of this illicit software."

PS3 hacker Mathieulh is also mentioned in one of the documents as recently proclaiming to be one of 20 individuals behind PSGroove, to quote: "Mathieu Hervais told BBC News he was one of about 20 hackers involved in PSGroove's development."

Just under a month ago Sony was granted an injunction by Australian Courts on the sale of PSJailBreak PS3 modchips, followed by blocking PS JailBreak and PS3 proxy methods with the release of the PS3 Firmware 3.42 update, so only time will tell what their next move is.

What's weird about the whole geohot thing is that the hack works on a firmware after otherOS was removed. I.E. they didnt use otherOS to do it in conjunction with his hack at least.

It also means that whatever they did could likely be done on the current firmware as well or at least the lack of otheros is not a limitation.

Yeah but, lets say you made the PS3 and somebody has hacked your system then disappears.. Then 4 months later your system system is PUBLICALLY hacked. Wouldnt geohot be the first in mind to either go after of get information out of him?

I think Sony is using scare tactics by suing anyone who contributes to the scene. They are just trying to slow down all the new jailbreaks from coming out.

The fact is that they will not win a case against hackers jailbreaking the console unless they can prove that the main purpose was for piracy, which PSGroove was not.

If Sony opened (and kept open) the consoles OtherOS and a feature to run HomeBrew, there would be no legal reason/need for the 'hacks', then their lawsuits would have more merit.

Playon is a nice media server just thought I'd mention it. This is really funny though Sony is desperate right now. Arent they named in a lawsuit for using cell technology someone else previously patented or something? I thought I read that some where...What makes them any different from us (aside from the fact they rip all of us for billions of $ each year.)

Then try to sue us for even more. LOL what a big joke. If everyone got tired of their shit and boycotted their products they'd feel like a real douche then wouldnt they..Uh oh no more paid trips for the CEO's They would be forced to layoff and do cut backs inevitably they would be cutting their own throats.. They have one company with many employees . We have the rest of the world... Which is bigger.

Lets take Microsoft for example they dont like that we modify our consoles but I dont remember all these lawsuits against distributors? (other than those arrested for selling pirated games to people) No they spend a million bucks and do a worldwide system ban each year ....Why...Simple because all those systems that just got banned , chances are those people are going to go buy a new system. Thats why I think Microsoft sales consistently stayed above ps3.

If we purchase a car are they going to tell us that we can not drive this car past 60mpg even though the top speed is 110? Are they going to say that we cant modify the engine or lower the frame? No because we bought it, and its ours to do whatever we want to it. Now if we are caught speeding then of course we get a speeding ticket.

Its in our law and we agree to abide by it just as we agree to abide by the terms of use on our online consoles. If we break the terms of use there are consequences (system bans from online play) but that doesn't constitute arresting us for jailbreaking a system... If that's the case then I guess apple will have about 75% of world arrested for jailbreaking their iphone lol

Sony needs to get a clue to many retarded republicans with their hand shoved up their ass thinking how can we keep ripping off the world.

Not even close to XBMC IMO. Tried Tversity, PS3 Media server etc. Not a fan.

XBMC is what i am hoping for as well.

xbmc type usage has been around for a while the form of PS3 media server. You can watch any video and almost all audio types via this program. The best part besides the streaming option is the ability to convert on the fly and copy directly to the ps3 HDD any HD content on the PC. If u are strictly wireless, and wanting to watch HD files (which don't stream well on WiFi) and files over 4gb, that's how it's done.

reverse engineering is legal. IF the JB was stolen, then sold - the person who bought it, if they truly didn't know it was stolen - is still guilty...

being in posession of stolen property without knowledge is no excuse. you can and will be charged as such (example - a friend of mine bought a JDM motor for his car from a reputable store in toronto. had it installed, a yr later a spotcheck ran the VIN onthe block - came back stolen. his car was impounded and he was charged)

but, he had recepts for the motor, the install labour recept, etc etc...still didn't matter. if it's LEGIT reverse engineer and a home made exploit without any sony copywritten info/sdk, then it should be ok.

at this point it's all speculation.. but at the same time, they never went after psx and even ps2 modchip resellers/installers....
