September 27, 2010 // 11:07 pm - Today garyopa at PSX-Scene.com (linked above) reports that Sony appears to be targeting the PS JailBreak, PSFreedom and PSGroove related PS3 hacks and has shared numerous court documents for those interested.

From one of the documents, to quote: "Similarly targeted document subpoenas or deposition notices to any other third party who SCEA learns may be involved in the distribution or sale of the PS Jailbreak software, known as, for example, PSGroove, OpenPSJailbreak, and PSFreedom, or who may have knowledge of the distribution or sale of this illicit software."

PS3 hacker Mathieulh is also mentioned in one of the documents as recently proclaiming to be one of 20 individuals behind PSGroove, to quote: "Mathieu Hervais told BBC News he was one of about 20 hackers involved in PSGroove's development."

Just under a month ago Sony was granted an injunction by Australian Courts on the sale of PSJailBreak PS3 modchips, followed by blocking PS JailBreak and PS3 proxy methods with the release of the PS3 Firmware 3.42 update, so only time will tell what their next move is.

Frankly - anyone going online with JB-ed PS3 without thinking at all of consequences deserves to be baned anyway. You know you're breaching Sony's T&Cs and if you want to play (offline) your backups just get cheaply another PS3. You can't have it all (at least for now) and even if there would be in future an option to either go online with JB-ed PS3 not on the latest FW version or having the latest FW JB-ed and some additional steps would be taken to protect users from being detected it's still up to every single user to decide if it's worth the risk.

And regarsd all the injunctions and threats Sony is throving left and right - they can't stop it anymore - just mildly slow down

Infringement and Counterfeits Act with some Republican support and the President wants to wiretap our emails so how are the Dems better.

Anyway back to the topic. We all know how this will play out Sony will sue and make an example of a few people. (Remember the kid who decrypted DVDs so they can play on his Linux PC) They will get like 5 years and an huge fine. They that will be all she wrote the pioneers are always the ones that go down to be made an example of.

The end users won't get sued and they will probably go the Microsoft route and ban consoles to increase their sales probably handicapping them through an update if you try to sign on PSN with a jailbreak system. Like Microsoft did when I got banned from xbox live on my xbox I couldn't install games to HDD or use media center extender or play divx.

well quick explained something like that, that would just be wierd, they do have a jig, but i assume it wouldn't emulate a hub in that way, it would just respond to a challange or something.

but well i'm just guessing but why would they use any kinda attack on their own system

there was some leaked data about the JIG and you can find it and how it works online... it is pretty much stolen tech... but really, who cares? let's have fun with it! hehe just umm don't sell it and such... especially for 150 bucks...

in canada the jailbreak will never be illegal, you even have the right to share copyrighted files.

how about this... the real reason we allowed japan to attack us is because we wanted money... i have no doubt of that... the reality is that cap'n fart knocker insulted my country and i explained his sucks... plain and simple you don't like that then cool, have a tantrum... but don't bash my nation and expect me to sit and smile.

here is the deal... it was illegally obtained information and that illegally obtained info was hacked... the source is still illegal... if you don't like my nation cut all ties to it... do this on a personal level... otherwise watch what you say and be thankful we do what we do... we do our best to take care of ourselves and everyone else... and yes everyone asks us for help.

being in posession of stolen property without knowledge is no excuse. you can and will be charged as such (example - a friend of mine bought a JDM motor for his car from a reputable store in toronto. had it installed, a yr later a spotcheck ran the VIN onthe block - came back stolen. his car was impounded and he was charged)

but, he had recepts for the motor, the install labour recept, etc etc...still didn't matter. if it's LEGIT reverse engineer and a home made exploit without any sony copywritten info/sdk, then it should be ok.

at this point it's all speculation.. but at the same time, they never went after psx and even ps2 modchip resellers/installers....

not really... if you dig enough in the right places you can find certain people who did certain things and bragged about it... the inet is not a fogiving creature but we get the benefits!!! so who cares if these fools messed up and end up in jail... just be careful where you download from and remember say nothing to the police... they lie LOL

piracy aside - the jailbreak has legit uses. and the decision of the iphone jb lawsuit/judgement is very similar to the use of ps3 jb methods.

i'm hoping for xbmc on ps3 asap.. with BR support!

i agree sorta, but the DMCA deal was not a lawsuit... was a change in law... changes in the "digital millennium copyright act" if read could possible make jailbreaking ps3 totally legal but would likely need to go to court... that is not the route sony is taking tho... they are trying to prove that there was stolen tech... and there is plenty on the net showing so... i hope for the best but fear the worst... if the ppl who stole the JIG go to jail then so be it... i just hate that the ppl who reverse engineered that are going to get in trouble...

I bet you he found a way to unpack the PUP with his exploit and switched out the INDEX.DAT files (/dev_flash/vsh/etc/index.dat)

Because thats what holds the firmware version... Although i used a 3.00 index.dat and my Firmware Version just said X.XX
