January 25, 2010 // 4:04 pm - Just before the weekend iPhone 2G hacker GeoHot announced that he has hacked the PS3 entertainment system, and today (linked above) has confirmed from their Rep that Sony is launching an investigation into it.

This comes as no surprise, considering a public PlayStation 3 hack would cost Sony Corporation and developers millions in lost revenue due to piracy as a result of reverse-engineering their intellectual property.

GeoHot has also told the BBC that, "I can now do whatever I want with the system. It's like I've got an awesome new power - I'm just not sure how to wield it."

To quote: "We contacted Sony and a spokesperson confirmed that the company is looking into the issue.

"We are investigating the report and will clarify the situation once we have more information," said the statement."

Time will tell if Sony gets tough or goes in the direction as Apple did, simply sending out DMCA notices and not attempting to hold George Hotz personally accountable for his actions.

Unfortunately, unless Sony makes an example of Hotz it may encourage other hackers to continue defeating their proprietary protection schemes without ill consequence.

Our advice to GeoHot: Let common sense be your guide, and isolate yourself from end-user PS3 hacks or exploits that could be proven by a court as used to circumvent protection or aid in software piracy... it simply isn't worth the risk.

Good luck GeoHot!

With GeoHot's latest update, he has now stated/confirmed that he does not plan to release anything that could be considered "risky" (files, etc) on his blog so he should be fine. To quote:
First off, this is not a release blog like "On The iPhone". If you are expecting some tool to be released from this blog like blackra1n, stop reading now. If you have a slim and are complaining this hack won't work for you, stop reading now. WE DO NOT CONDONE PIRACY, NOR WILL WE EVER. If you are looking for piracy, stop reading now. If you want to see the direction in which I will take this blog, read the early entries in the iPhone one. Information on this blog is for research purposes only.

That said, I suppose we can now close this topic as it's beginning to drift anyway.

if i was sony, i would give GeoHot a job at sony because he is a very smart kid, he doesn't deserve to go to jail.

maybe homebrew is nice but no loaders because it ruins the system.

I knew i had read somewhere that sony was now in profit on hardware sales instead.
As of January 2008, each unit cost around $400 to manufacture; by August 2009, Sony had reduced costs by a total of 70%, meaning it only costs Sony around $240 per unit.

I'm sure i read it on ps3news but couldn't find it so checked out:

Very weird. The BBC is running this story on it's news programs (not just "local interest" slots, it's in the national channels) with a 2 minute article, stating that it "could allow the running of copied PS2 games". Just shows that they may not understand what's happening here

you know as long as 50 cent can have a 20 mil house and drive 30 new cars worth more than my house and sport a jewelry store on his attire for lunch were not stealing a thing from these mega giants. These guys are way too fat. I hope they hack the crap out of it.

The difference is, Sony doesn't make most of their money from system sales. In fact, they were losing money on each system sold up until 2ish years ago. They get their money from software/accessory sales. A hack to the ps3 would cost them software and possibly even accessory sales.

I've been waiting for the ps3 to be hacked just to find that out. Will sony really lose a lot and is microsoft losing a lot or is nintendo losing a lot on their hacked consoles?
