236w ago - Update #2: squarepusher2 has released several more updates to SNES9x PS3, the Super Nintendo Emulator for PlayStation 3, which are all available for download now HERE.

Update: A new SNES9x r2 binary is now available with changes noted HERE followed by a SNES9x v1.0.3 port by Alex793 which includes some more fixes for those interested.

I got my Teensy++ Thursday and decided to port SNES9x (Super Nintendo Emulator) over to the PS3 as a little exercise to play with the Cell SDK.

It's pretty rough but it seems to work OK. It will load (uncompressed) ROMs off of /dev_usb000.

If anyone is interested, the code is linked above via GitHub with a binary attached below.

It's a new port to PS3 LV2 OS based on the vanilla SNES9x source.

To build:

• Install Cell SDK >= 1.92. You know how to find it. Configure according to the install instructions (make sure to set CELL_SDK).
• Make pkg
• Load the pkg and your ROMs onto a usb drive.
• Install on PS3 using your jailbreak device of choice.

Things that suck:

• Lots of SNES9x features are not supported yet. No save states, for example. Most of these are really simple to implement.
• Sound code is rubbish. It more or less works, but you'll probably hear the occasional skip.
• Performance isn't great.
• UI. Or rather, there isn't one.
• So much more.

Is there a way to set the emulator to use 1080i without changing my main ps3 settings as i want to keep that 1080p?

wouldn't really need a debug though to try, just code in some hefty error detection into a dev build. Pain in the ass signing and packing though I guess every time you make a small tweak. I'm pretty sure you can make a mfw for 3.15 with the mfw program though and asbestos 1.5 does an ok job of booting linux only the bootloader is very restricting but the same sort of hardware access grafs method will bring (except rw access to ram but thats not really needed for this)

It'd help with the input lag too, and it'd make a decent gui feasible.

Good question - the only games that need it at the moment are -

1 - Romancing Saga 3 - hires equip screen drops to 42/43fps.
2 - Vortex - not 60fps constant
3 - Star Fox 2 - same here - hovers between 55/53fps and 60fps when it's not having a bad day.

the main problem is that the development environment (retail PS3 with no debug FW) sucks - I'm hoping OtherOS++ gets released soon that we can run jailbroken / with a CFW on a firmware above 3.15 - we don't want to have to go through this ordeal of the app hanging everytime we try some stuff out with the SPUs - that would be absolute hell.

Another obstacle -

1 - This emulator (or parts of it) might not be parallelizable - in the sense that we can't just offload certain parts to a different CPU and have the main CPU (the PPU) get on with its job. A lot of emulators like MAME can't really make effective use of multi core CPUs beyond a dual-core for this very same reason.

Are there any plans to shift some of this to any of the SPU's to keep the framerates up?

It sucks to hear that input lag is still such a major problem. Just a couple of questions -

Are you trying the HD version or the Normal version?

The HD version runs every SNES game at 512x448 'interlaced' - normally SNES games would run at 256x224 or 256x239 non-interlaced mode. Try doing the following in the XMB -

Go to Settings -> Display Settings -> Video Output Settings.

Go through the first step, then select 'Custom' (When asked 'Select a setting method'). Untick '1080p' there and make sure that 1080i is ticked.

Go to the next step and confirm the changes. SNES9x PS3 should now use 1080i instead of 1080p - and since it's an interlaced mode and the HD version is running every game internally in an interlaced mode - this might cure the problem you're having.

Yeah, I should definitely get my act together with regards to a good GUI. I'll look at that site, thanks. As for the person who asked how you could save - this depends on the 'Control Scheme' you have selected in the Settings menu.

Old control scheme - R2 + R3 for quicksaving, L2 + R3 for quickloading

New control scheme - R2 + Right stick down for quicksaving, R2 + Right stick up for quickloading

WIth the custom control scheme, you can customize this to any button you want.

I made a new PKG for 3.55 CFW - I will include the new zip file here. I'm on 3.41 JB so I can't test it for myself.

i love the fact it includes so many shaders, it adds interesting twists at times, haha. not to mention you can test different ones out for different games, doing so well will result in best possible visuals.

I remember playing Sim City, Zelda : A Link to the Past, Donkey Kong and the like and messing with the shaders and got some games to show up as nice as they could possibly be. I was happy with this app and it's features.

Can't get enough of SNES. haha. Wish we had a homebrew SDK to develop SNES games, sure you can create a lookalike but I'd love to create a custom rom game in itself. Is this even possible? lol.
