228w ago - Previously we reported on a PSN ban rumor which was followed by speculation on preventing bans, and today Dutch site PS3-Sense (linked above) claims that according to SKFU Sony plans to combat PS3 piracy with Blu-ray disc serial keys.

Similar to what's been done with PC games in the past, when you buy a PS3 or PSN game you'll get a serial key with it which you can use up to 5 times.

This gives Sony a signal that you are authorized to play the game and that you have a legal copy of the game, and the serial key only works with the same Blu-ray disc with the same serial number.

To quote, roughly translated: "From a very reliable source (SKFU) we have heard a striking new feature of the PS3. The feature would be present even at the PlayStation Network but is currently still hidden.

It is a serial system which Sony will soon start working on. Since the root keys are on the street you can see every homebrew tool (including backup management) make it sound like it was made by Sony. This makes it so hard for Sony to detect and block gamers with backup managers.

The idea is that soon every Blu-ray disc, with a unique number, comes with a serial key. These serial keys then work only with the Blu-ray disc with a matching number.

Therefore, if you have bought a game and put it into your PS3 you will enable it using your serial key, and thus a signal to Sony indicates that you are authorized to play the game on your PlayStation 3.

Reportedly, any serial key may be used only five times, as many PlayStation Store downloads. Given the implementation, according to our source has already been done in the PlayStation Network, and three unknown input fields on the PlayStation Network indicates the probability that this system will be introduced is enormous."

Sony doesn't care if it destroys the used game market, nor do game makers who despise the used game market. And the used game companies can't 'sue' Sony for loss of business... That's absurd. Businesses must adapt to changing conditions of the market...

Most users of the PS3 are too afraid to unlock their PS3 for fear of: bricking it, putting the whole process in the "too hard basket", and or not knowing how to get any benefit from doing it in the first place.

If you know how to set your PC up for torrents, FTP, JB your PS3 and are comfortable flashing CFW then it's a piece of cake.

But for the other 95% of users they have no clue. I'm uploading vid to FB using the BM to load games from HDD and my friends are like... "What's that... duh..."

I remember hearing something like this when they took the OtherOS away, but then nothing came of it.

Are you saying that only you can play pirated games you don't like? Are you saying that if you don't like a game that I like it's ok for you to pirate it but if you like a game that I don't like it's not ok for me to pirate it?

Is Black Ops a good game for you? It sure isn't for me... knowing that the ps3 version was really poorly made.

Maybe pirates shouldn't exist? Maybe games shouldn't cost as much as they do? Maybe Sony shouldn't have removed OtherOS and PS2 games support? Maybe games should be made from scratch for each platform?

Good for you... in your mind you can pirate but I can't... good for you.

On-topic - I wonder though, will this be for PSN Online service only or will you NEED to activate the game to play even single-player? The latter being an extremely bad design choice.

Bear with me as I did not read the whole thread, so if this has been answered before my apologies.

I could see keys for online play being possible for every game at some time but not for offline game play.

PC games never had rentals, atleast not here.
Console games have rentals and have since way back.

This would cause no rentals for PS3 systems.
As a parent if I was looking to buy one of the systems for my kid, would I go with the two I can let them rent games sometimes or the one I have to buy several games a year from them. Not everybody has the money for that.

I dont believe this rumor. This wouldnt be a good idea for Sony.
Remember the majority PS3 owner/gamer dont know anything about ps3 jb and even if/when they do they wont try it.

Please allow me to summarise the entire situation for you, this is entirely misinformed speculation

Now back on topic, im glad (if) they will put this measure into play, yea it will be hard to resell the game but i dont care, at least cheapos wont be playing online.. ie less kids. I pirate games that i will never buy - games i dont care about, rest i buy and play online like they were meant to be played, think of pirating as a trial/demo, you play single player, if you like it you pay and play online, if you dont well it saves people money rather then wasting on crappy games.

PS - My ps3 is still on ofw and playing games I payed for (and that deserve to be paid for) online.

That is all, happy pirating yall.
