Rumor: Sony to Combat PS3 Piracy with Blu-ray Disc Serial Keys

214w ago - Previously we reported on a PSN ban rumor which was followed by speculation on preventing bans, and today Dutch site PS3-Sense (linked above) claims that according to SKFU Sony plans to combat PS3 piracy with Blu-ray disc serial keys.

Similar to what's been done with PC games in the past, when you buy a PS3 or PSN game you'll get a serial key with it which you can use up to 5 times.

This gives Sony a signal that you are authorized to play the game and that you have a legal copy of the game, and the serial key only works with the same Blu-ray disc with the same serial number.

To quote, roughly translated: "From a very reliable source (SKFU) we have heard a striking new feature of the PS3. The feature would be present even at the PlayStation Network but is currently still hidden.

It is a serial system which Sony will soon start working on. Since the root keys are on the street you can see every homebrew tool (including backup management) make it sound like it was made by Sony. This makes it so hard for Sony to detect and block gamers with backup managers.

The idea is that soon every Blu-ray disc, with a unique number, comes with a serial key. These serial keys then work only with the Blu-ray disc with a matching number.

Therefore, if you have bought a game and put it into your PS3 you will enable it using your serial key, and thus a signal to Sony indicates that you are authorized to play the game on your PlayStation 3.

Reportedly, any serial key may be used only five times, as many PlayStation Store downloads. Given the implementation, according to our source has already been done in the PlayStation Network, and three unknown input fields on the PlayStation Network indicates the probability that this system will be introduced is enormous."

It simply will not work. This proves they have nothing to pull out of the hat. Reason it wont work is because if the games are sold to stores and turn up as used games for sale multiple times the individual purchasing it the 6th time will not even be able to play the game what-so-ever rendering the game useless. Now I would be one pissed off customer if that happened to me. Not to mention that like PC games the games will be cracked with ease. They are running out of options and this goes to show. They cannot combat it now. It's out there all over the place and WE the user's WANT it that way. So no matter what Sony attempts to do they will fail big time. They need to focus on their new console and let the CFW ride it's journey out. Not to mention like another user had just stated, what happens if you wanna to take that game over to multiple friends houses throughout the year and they render your disc useless because they think that the console your putting it into is PIRATING your legitimate game that you purchased? Sony will lose their ass on this one and as well as alot of true fans of the system and games if this passes. Move on to the PS4. It's about time for it anyways.

To do this sony would have to slash the price of new games in all fairness.

It aint going to happen, the little hitlers at sony can pardon my french off.

If sony thinks this will help them they are dead wrong lmfao.
You can only imagine how every other type of protection like this has been cracked within days if not hours! This just shows how far sony is willing to go to lose customers... Imagine you go to a friends house and want to bring your game over there and use it on their PS3, well there goes 1 license...

This wouldn't work nor be legal here in the UK because of the trading standards thingamabob 1979, as this was amended this year to allow full refunds on games that are buggy or not 100% satisfactory, hopefully resulting in proper games testing not pointing any fingers --> FIFA11.

you'll laughing now, but i can tell you, that (after currency compare) here in Hungary costs a new BD around 40+ euro, but can be found 50+ titles also. in the last time prices were dropped a bit, but almost every BDs are around 35. for a single, not collector's edition disc.

That's just my ideology, i buy games that i like and play on regular basis, game i pirate (or will?) will be games i will never buy like nba, etc etc, simply put games i don't like but just want to try.

think about it this way, piracy helps sony and the game devs to certain extent, helps sony for more consoles sold, helps devs (questionable?) by people pirating game they wont ever buy, then as they play it, they may spread the word about the game and people who are interested in it may but it; therefore, possibly boosting their sales...

First: WORD dud Then... the HACK scene exist of only 2 facts in history of video gaming consoles. They are:

On beginning of video games the industry AND Devs developed games and consoles along with computer games on a way that let you easey make copies of your games for the only reason... that you spread and make computer games along with video console games marketing able for the whole planet.

As this goal was reached they started to use protections and marked us (the user) as the bad, bad mafia guy who steel them there daily food. But before they used gamers and enthusiast like you and me to make the whole thing fit for the world marked.

Second point is that they (the big concerns) milk consumers and also milk developers to get more and more rich in case of they sell there games totally over priced. Its not worth the money. Do a comparison to movies. There are really expensive movies out and the video gaming industry make more money then the Movie industry to time. But have you ever seen a movie (doesnt be of interesd if it is a CD,DVD,DVD-DL or BD) priced with 50,60 or even 70 € ??

Are you ALL SUCH Blind ??

so... for the $100 question... are you a "cheapos" that play online i.e kid?

How to turn logic into illogic? Judge people without having moral to do it. Who has moral? no one does.. weeee

I think Sony has little space for maneuver... Implementing this and making internet connection mandatory for game play would start a chain of court cases against Sony because it would be a con.

Is Black Ops a good game for you? It sure isn't for me... knowing that the ps3 version was really poorly made.

Maybe pirates shouldn't exist? Maybe games shouldn't cost as much as they do? Maybe Sony shouldn't have removed OtherOS and PS2 games support? Maybe games should be made from scratch for each platform?

Good for you... in your mind you can pirate but I can't... good for you.
