April 27, 2012 // 4:54 am - Today we received word from Dutch site (ConsoleWinkel) of a rumor that a Sony PS3 Blu-ray drive emulation PCB is currently in development which will allow users to unlock their PlayStation 3 console without the use of Custom Firmware or dongles.

Reportedly they have been in contact with who stated a team (possibly the Wasabi or Drivekey team) is working on the PS3 Blu-ray drive emulation PCB that is slated for release later this year.

They have also speculated via e-mail that the project has been kept under tight wraps due to Sony being unable to stop this new PS3 hack via Firmware updates, meaning once it becomes public Sony's legal team will be on the warpath in full force.

Below are some concept pictures (not actual finished product pictures) from their site and the details, roughly translated as follows:

"PlayStation 3 drive emulation

No hacking, no flashing, no modding. Emulation is the future. A team is currently working on a new hack for the PlayStation 3.

The Blu-ray player, Sony's PCB has been cracked and costs can thus be gekloont. The team probably Wasabi or Wiikey team is currently working on this for the board to connect to an external HDD.

This can be downloaded games played as Wasabi360 and Xkey for the XBox 360.

A major retailer in China has also indicated that this year is released."

Finally, China Distribution has replied to an e-mail from hitman43 (via as follows:

"Zitat: Hi,

i didn't know anything about this product, i don't know why people ARE thinking we are behind this device,

It is unknown whether the person responding is unaware of the rumored PS3 Blu-ray drive emulation PCB in development, or if they are simply attempting to keep things quiet and avoid any legal hassles from Sony... only time will tell for sure.

Below are a few status 3K3y updates since the previous one for those following...

3k3y status update!

  • Final hardware verification will start this week. All parts have been tested on development boards so no surprises are anticipated.

  • While built-in disk ripping does work, it is too slow to be practical. There is another way which is much faster and can most likely be delivered in a future update, but we will not have time to verify this before launch. So we decided to remove built-in disk ripping from the feature list and put it on the WIP list.

  • We have designed and completed software and a add-on board for connecting a PS3 drive to a PC via USB in order to dump games. This add-on board will be a part of the 3k3y kit.

  • A correction to the 3k3y status update: Built-in disk ripping will not be available on the release hardware. We took the hardware of 3k3y (where it was slow) and put it on an external board (where its blazing fast). This doesn't mean built-in disk ripping will never happen, it is still possible to do via the FPGA at high speeds.

Actually, the 360s drive firmware can easily be changed through updates, if you research XGD3.

I am honestly surprised this device didn't come out a long time ago, but I assume (as with this scene) there was drama in the timing of it.

You know, I am interested to see how soon they find out how to extract the drive firmware on > 3.55. Let's say, for example, you are on 3.55, get your FW, then update to 4.21. Sometime later, Sony pulls a move similar to MS that effectively blocks emulation from working until you can create an updated drive firmware on the 3key. Hopefully it can be done on OFW. I would expect a cat-and-mouse scenario, that will only make this device viable by finding a reliable way to extract the drive key.

This easy, highly unlikely to be patched solution now has a price 129USD.. was staking for 100 to be honest, but I guess I'll get it anyway!

From 3K3Y: Were gearing up for our - as in you and us! - busiest season. Xmas! 3k3y, together with Xk3y, will be the 2 brightest stars on your Xmas sales charts. The 3k3y launch will be slightly different from other product launches we have done, so please let us share some important information with you - more will follow shortly.

3k3y for Xmas! SRP (Suggested Retail Price): USD129
3k3y is the perfect solution for PS3 USB loading and gaming.
With 3k3y gamers can rip and play their games from any USB media.

Let's start by recapping some of the most important features:

  • Works with both Fat and Slim models (there will be one 3k3y version for each model)
  • Plug n play installation, no soldering required
  • Integrated game ripper
  • Works with full ISO releases
  • Works with any official firmware, CFW is not required for operation

3k3y uses very much the same code and components (sans the SATA chip) as Xk3y. This means we already have a rock solid, well tested system and stock of all major components and are ready to go into production as soon as the shrunken-down hardware has been verified. The tricky software parts, drive emulation and authentication, are already fully working. With components and software in place there's very little to derail a pre-Xmas launch.

Good news for people that want an easy solution... if its anything like the Xk3y for 360 should be a hit.

Yeah it can be patched, specially that BD drive had it's own firmware and it is highly updatable every PS3 update, unlike xbox360 and Wii which is not really that feasible to update with.

as far as I know, 3key intercept the communication between the BD drive and the PS3's Motherboard. If 3Key emulates the blu-ray drive itself by making a copy of the BD Drive's firmware with everything, then it's highly unlikely to be patched via software.

Any kind of exploit can be patched but if you use that excuse then nothing is ever going to be released.

It's easy.

Just because it isn't stupid-proof, doesn't mean its crap. DEX allows you to do much more and its brick can be recovered by using a Flasher, actually, you can easily avoid it by reading tutorials and not being mentally challenged.

you forgot the important thing. You cant run unsigned code on Official Firmware, also it makes the private keys we have in 3.55 or lower blocked. So how the hell they can execute it, you are even required to downgrade to 3.55 just to grab the BD keys.

Well unless you are in DEX, maybe all of those doesn't matter anymore since you can execute signed and unsigned codes.

Its awesome, and i bet that they can make homebrew apps in the future, because once you extract the PS3 drive key you can almost do every thing, just like the XBOX360.

Of course it is. DEX is a complete CRAP, how can you say that? I would never install that crap of DEX but I'm definately buyiing this: no need to change flash files and no risk for brick!!

This device is far more worst since it cant run Homebrew apps. It solely for pirate users.
