January 10, 2008 // 10:51 pm - We at asked Santa for a PS3 Test, and he delivered, albeit a bit late.

It is a special unit, it runs unsigned code, and can do loads of debugging.

Just today we have learned alot, including the Blu-Ray drives transparent encryption, and even dumped a majority of the flash and HDD from inside the unit (Unencrypted!)

More to come!

Well, as posted in the past Site News CJPC has been able to get PS3 retail back-ups working on his Debug console... but the process wasn't all 'neat and clean' to launch them after unpacking and patching.

So basically what he did was made a "Backup Launcher" frontend with a menu so you can select from games on the PS3 HDD and run them. Of course this is only on a Debug PS3, but still it's damn cool to see!

The joint project I mentioned above is geared towards retail PS3 consoles, so this way regular people like you and me can get involved, versus just reading about what the PS3 Devs are doing periodically.

Several of the PS2Dev guys are also part of the resident PS3 Dev team here, so they are all "in the loop" regarding what has been tried and what needs attention, etc.

As mentioned in our recent Site News, there is a joint project that has been in the works for some time now, and very soon it will be made public so the community can help the Devs out as well.

Aside from that, several others are actively involved in side-projects (PS3 related) of their own so these will also tie into the larger picture as each shares news of their work publically.

PS: Last night CJPC showed me a really cool screenshot of something he's been working on via the Debug... I'm sure he'll post it soon enough (when he's ready)

The Transparent Encryption is basically that when the PS3 software tries to access encrypted resources (HDD, BD drive, etc), the hardware (or HV/other low level software, like the kernel), decrypt it on the fly.

So to the PS3, these files are not even encrypted, even though they are.

There is still the SELF encryption, but one down, one to go!
