February 9, 2012 // 12:20 am - I want to give everyone the heads-up on my Dual Boot PS3 (2 NOR Flashes with Switch for Brick Recovery) project and try and get some feedback...

For the last few days I've been busy unbricking/downgrading etc. The spare time I've had has gone into designing my own Dual NOR expansion board for the PS3

Basics are this: It allows you to install 2 firmwares - one on either NOR which can be easily enabled/disabled via switch on the mod board. Initially the NOR expansion will need flashing (Dump NOR 1 & flash NOR 2 with the image)

Could be used as a "Brick Backup" if for any reason you brick your onboard NOR, you have a second image on the expansion.
Primary use is of course to Dual Boot firmware without needing to use your programmer all the time - initial program would be a one-off.

Can be quite useful, hence the reason for designing it. I am quite aware of the fact there are other products available which function the same. This is my own design which is a fair bit cheaper than the current Dual setups.

Once final thing, please bear in mind this is a VERY early prototype atm and still in testing. More than likely there will be a few changes along the way, but updates will be regular (finally got my head round Cadsoft)

I've attached a 3D sample picture... please share your comments!

I like it but, people still complain about soldering stuff. I laugh at them now but used to be like them. Now I have special tools to solder things to PCB conduit .40 MM wide with relative ease. Soldering stuff is fun! I enjoy modding stuff that you actually have to work on. All the easy USB mods are weak and patchable at best.

If it is not a direct hardware Mod or software Mod, it's just no fun. And as for all that voided warranty crap, If You Mod it by any means, having $0NY "fix" it will forcefully remove any Software mods and likely block them for the future so Just have some fun, whip out the soldering iron and feel the flux!! solder in an external switch for the extra NOR Flash board. Its easy and fun too!!!

Hey Mushy409 I'll be more than willing to test a prototype if You manage to have some made.

first of all great job! any ideas when this will be released?

and also, is there a way to downgrade a 4.xx ps3? there is no documentation anywhere.

will your method only require a teensy ++?

Another update for you lot... Pic of a semi-complete PCB with Teensy++ 2.0 attached.

Just running a few tests with read/write etc, then I need to test the switch PCB. So far looking good!

Ok guys and girls, it's been a while since I posted anything new... The last working prototype I made had a 50pin ZIF socket to be directly connected to Progskeet - This has been put on hold for now...

The latest working prototype is now DIRECTLY compatible with the Teensy++ 2.0 (NORway 0.6 beta)

Reasons for the redesign... The 50Pin ZIF is a pain to get hold of, as well as solder to the PCBs. Also the FFC cables are expensive and are rarely in stock in the UK

Here's a few little tasters of whats been going on the last few weeks...
