266w ago - With the release of PS3 Firmware 3.21, many are now planning to hold off updating their PlayStation 3 consoles and use one of the PS3 Proxy applications to bypass the required PS3 Firmware update to connect to PSN.

While most of the applications, guides and videos are quite dated (from 2007-2009), below are links to some to make navigating easier. Special THANKS to ekrboi and themiker for making recent guides as well, also available below.

We will continue to add relevant links as they are dug up, and also links to posts with all new guides that prove useful.

Anyone who can't game online when connect thru proxy..

Try to TURN OFF YOUR NOD32 FIREWALL or something like that!

And it should work!

It works for me)

If we get the work-around to work sucessfully, How are we supposed to get future firmware updates? I'm worried that updating to 3.21 will brick my ps3 since I've read people having problems with it.

This post is a few days late, but it seems a few people are having problems on using Linux machines to bypass the proxy. I run Linux and I found the simplest way of bypassing the check is to use squid (I've been doing this before mostly to log urls of packages)

On the linux box, install squid:

[Register or Login to view code]

Edit /etc/squid/squid.conf and uncomment these lines:

[Register or Login to view code]

Add this line:

[Register or Login to view code]

Save out and create /etc/squid/redirector containing:

[Register or Login to view code]

Run the following:

[Register or Login to view code]

Now, squid is up and running, configure your PS3 to use it. In network settings, choose custom, go through all the options until proxy. Then enter the ip address of your linux box and change the port from 8080 to 3128.

You are now ready to test the connection, but first on the linux box type this:

[Register or Login to view code]

When you test connection on the PS3, you'll see something like this in your logs:

[Register or Login to view code]

The URL here is the one the PS3 is attempting to connect with. So, in the web directory of your web server, do this:

[Register or Login to view code]

The final step is to edit fw321.txt and change the version check to
[Register or Login to view code]

You should find now that testing the connection on the PS3 works and you should now be able to sign into PSN. One potential trouble you might have is that you need the correct Dest= for your console. UK ones are 87, european are 85, etc...

what happens is it just gives you a connection error and signs out of PSN.

Actually for (most of) the game updates you don't even need to by signed into PSN so if your selected option of bypassing the FW check is giving you troubles in updating particular game or application (mainly Life with Playstation / F@H) deactivate it for the update itself and you should be with update OK

This is indeed only valid for the updates detected / downloaded upon start up of the game (which is most of them anyway with latest games) but will not work with updates detected while starting the online mode of the game - like Everybody's Golf: World Tour / Out of bounds Golf 5 (which also doesn't work online with practically any of the proxy tools mentioned in this thread - you'd need to use DNS redirection method to get online with it, the same goes for F@H uploads / downloads of units).
