July 13, 2010 // 3:05 pm - Today George Hotz aka GeoHot has announced he is retiring from Sony PS3 and Apple iPhone hacking, citing that the demand for updates from end-users will never stop.

In his exit from the PS3 scene, GeoHot left many legitimate PlayStation 3 users without OtherOS and without the promised 3.21OO PS3 Custom Firmware.

The good news? Others whom GeoHot shared the PS3 METLDR info and LV2 dump with are currently using his work to continue hacking the PS3 console, with rumors from IRC (for what those are worth LOL) indicating a public "end-user" PS3 hack may arrive before September 2010 from their camp.

Unfortunately though, just like the past Dark_AleX and "M33" PSP releases, an incoming PS3 hack will probably be from a fictitious group and won't include anything useful to PS3 Devs such as dumps, reversals, sourcecode, etc.

Hopefully once a hole that Sony can't block is public, other PlayStation 3 Devs will begin working on the PS3 though... and sharing all the juicy the technical details along the way for others who wish to learn.

This will help ensure the PS3 scene won't fall victim to the hypocritical and ridiculous "anti-piracy, users deserve nothing" attitude that began the downfall and led to the fate of the current PSP scene.

To quote: His PS3 username, Twitter account, and blog are all now shut down. His last tweet said, "it was a cool ride, and i've learned a lot about a lot. perhaps one of these days i'll do a more formal goodbye."

Along with that post, he wrote in his blog explaining his reasons for retiring from the scene. He says that he "didn't fully realize most of the current scene don't care unless they are getting something," but now he does.

He then continued a bit more in his post with the following: "The real reason behind no release isn't technical. It's just that it will never stop, after blackra1n, people demand unlock, after blacksn0w, people demand untethered. I miss the days when jailbreaking and unlocking were difficult, it attracted a much higher caliber crowd."

While I agree with the ego part, I can't say I'd agree with community comments determining an individual adult's actions.

I'm sure GeoHot was fully aware when he got involved in hobbies including the iPhone and PS3 that there would be great demands from the community on him to produce and update once he exhibited the talent to do so.

It's common sense and expected by most, and there is definitely nothing wrong with that as those who choose to partake in hobbies do so for their own pleasure and satisfaction.

If GeoHot determines he no longer enjoys it, that decision is his but should certainly not be "blamed" on the rest of the community who still wish to enthusiastically engage in the hobby.

That said, blaming a community in my opinion is just a cop-out for one's self already making the decision that they no longer enjoy what they are doing... and if that is the case, he may as well just use any excuse or none at all when he left.

For all we know, GeoHot's real life became more important than e-fame finally and he just needed to jump the ship, or the shark perhaps. Maybe he got a steady girlfriend or a decent job offer which requires time commitments as a result of his schooling or making a name for himself. Whatever it was, he definitely made the final decision himself.

It's sad geohot has chosen to leave the ps3 and iphone scene. Well, it turns out planetbeing has managed to unlock and jailbreak the new iphone 4, iphone 3GS with new bootrom after all. Hence, not much of a big deal to the iphone scene. As for the ps3 scene, at least someone got ahold of geohot's metldr and lv2 dumps. Hopefully they make good use of them and do something for the community.

Grojcig is also another guy who is starting some CELL related development work:

From a few of the tweets:

Another image i want you to look at :P

Image shows the LS when the code in my last tweet executes Are the Stacks at the right place? Are the sizes correct?

I'm not sure if i understood the Stack creation and managment for SPU correctly. Here's the code

LS is something you can extremely abuse. There's no protection for stack overflows. Yesterday i managed to overflow it with recursive calls.

Props to dondolo for letting us know!

He could have left us with something, at least 1 cfw that the devs could have continued. Yes he was clever enough to do what he did, but in the end all he did for us was leave us worse off. Thanks Geo.

Normally that would ring true, but I don't believe these guys would release something that could easily be patched by Sony so hopefully it won't be an issue.

Also, I wouldn't hold my breath for a PS3 hack/exploit release by September, as far as I know that is just what RichDevX is rumored to have told someone on IRC... it could be BS, false, a joke, etc. but if it's legit then great, of course!

Update: According to Mathieulh, "nothing is planned on our end" so it appears RichDevX was either lying or joking on IRC... so much for his credibility, unless Mathieulh is lying like he does about using warez, eh?

Time will tell for sure, but at least others who got access to GeoHot's private info and files are still working on hacking the PS3, which is really the important part as it means all hope is not lost even with GeoHot bailing from the scene.
