GeoHot Resumes Sony PS3 Hacking, Opens PS3 Hacks Blog

274w ago - This weekend GeoHot, the hacker responsible for several Apple iPhone hacks, has returned to Sony PS3 hacking after his initial announcement a few months back and has opened a PS3 hacks blog (linked above).

He recently made this Tweet:

"I just pulled everything from the USB bus... http://pastie.org/757313 the Cell processor SPI bus, PS3 is going down :-)"

These are the latest posts on his new PS3 hacks blog:

Cell SPI

The Cell processor has an SPI port which is used to configure the chip on startup. Well documented here. It also allows hypervisor level MMIO registers to be accessed. In the PS3, the south bridge sets up the cell, and the traces connecting them are on the bottom layer of the board. Cut them and stick an FPGA between.

Quick theoretical attack. Set an SPU's user memory region to overlap with the current HTAB. Change the HTAB to allow read/write to the hypervisor! If that works it's full compromise of the PPU.

A Real Challenge

The PS3 has been on the market for over three years now, and it is yet to be hacked. It's time for that to change.

I spent three weeks in Boston working software only, but now I'm home and have hardware. My end goal is to enable unsigned code execution, making every unit into a test and opening up a third party development community, either through software or hardware (with a mod chip). The PS3 is a prime example of how security should be done, very open docs wise, and the thing even runs Linux. But it isn't unbreakable :-)

Haha, it's about time! Sony wasn't messing around this time and made the ps3 some hardcore business The same couldn't be said for the psp

But hey, like others said... Modded systems DO actually end up in more profit for the companies (most of the time). Just because they're much more capable of doing the things that you'd like them to do.

This is so true. I was bored with my original Xbox until I put an X3 in it. And then that led to a much larger HDD. And that led to some other small mods. If anything, it motivated me to put more money into it (buy more games, equipment, etc).

As I was taking out Wolverine and popping in Rock Band 2 on the PS3 today, I was just thinking how nice it would be to just go to my dashboard and select whatever game I want. Here's to hoping it happens soon!

As it has been said, there isn't much of a case as long as he doesn't profit from it (hence the donations if you want idea ) Sony could bring up some DRM/Copyright issues, but I don't think that would take them far at all.

What I am curious about it how legit of a company Sony is willing to be who knows? maybe flying ninja monkeys will pay geohot a visit? Keep up the good work guys!

ye there is no law about disallowing disassembling your property, even if - another law about researching (at least in .de basic law) would protect you imo. Tho... sony rly likes to 'satisfy' hackers etc. to join the other side

they could also send some summons to discontinue research you never know what they actually can/do...

and the usual stuff (if he gets online -> banning from psn)

I just realized: If the PS3 would get hacked, the hackers could create their own, AWESOME animated themes for us!

I'd love to see that!

so geo gives a crap if you post his living adress anywhere.

Although that could be true, giving out his address could be a potential security risk from sony, and also random people arriving at his house. Which brings point to why the PS3 Devs are trying to keep on the radar, but Geohot is making himself a wide target. I wonder whats up his sleeve with these tactics.
