283w ago - This weekend GeoHot, the hacker responsible for several Apple iPhone hacks, has returned to Sony PS3 hacking after his initial announcement a few months back and has opened a PS3 hacks blog (linked above).

He recently made this Tweet:

"I just pulled everything from the USB bus... http://pastie.org/757313 the Cell processor SPI bus, PS3 is going down :-)"

These are the latest posts on his new PS3 hacks blog:

Cell SPI

The Cell processor has an SPI port which is used to configure the chip on startup. Well documented here. It also allows hypervisor level MMIO registers to be accessed. In the PS3, the south bridge sets up the cell, and the traces connecting them are on the bottom layer of the board. Cut them and stick an FPGA between.

Quick theoretical attack. Set an SPU's user memory region to overlap with the current HTAB. Change the HTAB to allow read/write to the hypervisor! If that works it's full compromise of the PPU.

A Real Challenge

The PS3 has been on the market for over three years now, and it is yet to be hacked. It's time for that to change.

I spent three weeks in Boston working software only, but now I'm home and have hardware. My end goal is to enable unsigned code execution, making every unit into a test and opening up a third party development community, either through software or hardware (with a mod chip). The PS3 is a prime example of how security should be done, very open docs wise, and the thing even runs Linux. But it isn't unbreakable :-)

I just imagined what will happen when the first real hack & homebrew gets released.
These forums will burn!

Just look at the Motorstorm Backup Exploit and Zpack threads!

well the jailbreak that GeoHot has up on the site (blackra1n) doesen't work whether or not its just a few bugs or not i dont know, but apparently other people have had problems as well with everytime the power is turned off it went into recovery mode.. meaning you needed a computer with itunes just to access your or listen to music so the arrrival of software for ps3 i wouldn't hold my breath as it is going to be a long wait.

I think Geo is a very smart individual and can make some progress with this, but like many others have said here - he is student hobbyist. Listen... I am not saying that makes him any less. I could not in my wildest dreams perform the hacks he is trying, but if this leads to something great I am all for it.

Personally just like the iPhone DEV Team - I feel the PS3 DEV Team might have a more solid approach to this mystery machine.

I would venture to say this has been the only system with a hack taking this long to develop. Any one know if it is winning that contest?

He isn't god, and goes to school... I hope from regular devs who are searching for long and constantly.

I can sort of understand why. Being that he is talented and in school, seeing that he hacked the iphone and ps3, was the leader, did it on his own, bla bla etc. etc. will look good on a resume for whatever security based job he is applying too. Hopefully not Sony! Imagine trying to hack the next gen gaming system when the security was built in some measure by him.

Also just another thing, I don't know much about the devs, but I would assume from all this secrecy that they have very stable live/families and that's what could contribute to their methods vs. geohotz. If you think about it, he's got nothing to lose, only to gain. The devs however might possibly have careers and reputations on the line, and anything that goes wrong might have horrible consequences. Just my opinion. Feel free to correct and inform me

i'm not pretty sure, but i think the main problem is that many informations the ps3 devs already found out about exploits or hinds is important to keep private.. and they dont realy know if geohot is able to keep them private.

but i dont know if im right with that.

But hey, like others said... Modded systems DO actually end up in more profit for the companies (most of the time). Just because they're much more capable of doing the things that you'd like them to do.

Yeah. If you look at Ps3 exclusive game sales you can guess that ppl have a lot of interest in using their consoles for more than just gaming. I recently suggested a PS3 to my sister because she bought a new hdtv in the states. She doesn't game but it would be good for her entertainment and even more so if it was hacked.
