GeoHot: Don't Update to 3.21, Promises PS3 Custom Firmware

Sponsored Links
261w ago - Today infamous PS3 hacker GeoHot has blogged that users should not update their PS3 entertainment systems to PS3 Firmware v3.21 when it is released this Thursday as it will disable the OtherOS functionality, and as incentive not to update he has promised the very community he isn't sharing details on how to dump lv2 with that he will work on a solution which could include PS3 Custom Firmware.

To quote: "A note to people interested in the exploit and retaining OtherOS support, DO NOT UPDATE. When 3.21 comes out, I will look into a safe way of updating to retain OtherOS support, perhaps something like Hellcat's Recovery Flasher. I never intended to touch CFW, but if that's how you want to play...

Two things, some people seem to think CFW will enable some sort of piracy. It won't. It'll just be a custom version of 3.21 that doesn't lose OtherOS support. Hacking isn't about getting what you didn't pay for, it's about making sure you do get what you did.

And this is about more than this feature right now. It's about whether these companies have the right to take away advertised features from a product you purchased. Imagine if an exploit were found in Safari on the iPhone, but instead of fixing it, Apple decides to pull web browsing altogether. Legally, they may be within their right to do so, but we have to show them it's the wrong move for the future of the product and the company.

First off, I want to apologize to all the people who use Linux on their PS3. Before releasing, I weighed the pros and cons, and considered the possibility of an impact on OtherOS support.

My logic was this. OtherOS support had already been removed from the Slim (not for technical reasons; I believe it only existed in the first place to promote the Cell for IBM) The builders had apparently no intention of including it in future products. So for the purposes of openness why not release? Not like anything else has (or probably will be) done on the PS3.

Now you go and remove a feature that people expected to be included with the expensive device they purchased, citing "security concerns". What security concerns? It's not like the exploit can be run even close to without the users knowledge.

You have to open the thing up. How could this harm users? Your blog post doesn't list positive reasons for upgrading like I think most users expect. Instead it lists things you will lose if you don't upgrade. Seriously?

The PlayStation 3 is the only product I know that loses features throughout it's life cycle. Software PS2 emulation, SACD playback, and OtherOS support are all just software switches you can flip. It's unbelievable you would go and flip one, not just on new boxes you are shipping, but on tens of millions already in the field."

Here is to hoping GeoHot releases a PlayStation 3 solution in a timely manner, as unfortunately the entire PS3 (and Linux) scene is left waiting on him at the moment.

He does, just not verbatim... see this post as it was covered there. What GeoHot promises users who don't update is a solution that may involve PS3 CFW, but most sites are reporting it as we are because this is the best way to summarize GeoHot's post.

Whether GeoHot delivers the promised 'solution' remains to be seen... personally I think he will, but I have a feeling it could be awhile so those anxious to play online, etc will likely get tired of waiting and update anyway.

^ This. I've been trying to get people to understand that the PS3 is a gaming system. Anything else it does is optional.

The update does not stop the PS3 from being a gaming system, therefore, you have no legal grounds to stand on. Please quit whining about taking legal actions.

The very most you'd get in a lawsuit is your money back for buying the system, nothing more.

They could remove everything out of it tomorrow except for playing single player games, and there isn't ANYTHING you can do bout it.

wrong. example: if you sign work contracts, and it stated you to NOT wear clothes, that contract is invalid... whatever you sign (accept) is still has to follow the laws of your country. and there is nothing sony can write in their TOS to break any laws..

Right, now that's out the way... Yes, it is because of GeoHot's system exploit that the OtherOS feature will be removed, but the real issue is that he should have shared his findings "behind the scenes" with dev's that could do something useful (read: run custom code) instead of publically saying "hey, i hacked it using OtherOS" and then keeping that to himself (so Sony are just as clueless as to what he can/can't do as we all are, and need to cover their butts).

I'm neither Team GeoHot (the fanboys) or Team EgoHot (the whiners), but i think that if there had been a collaboration then this could have been averted.

There is still time (and it's possibly essential) to form a collaborative team effort between George and the rest of the capable dev's around the world so as to push the ps3 towards being hacked/exploited/capable of running unsigned code etc.

It's no longer about the glory of "look at what i can make the ps3 do" now, it's become the time where every group and hacker works together, sharing their knowledge and making the ps3 scene univeral to achieve the same goal!

You know in some countries like mine. A company that imports a product under the name computer and sell it as a computer is okay. Since Sony added the Linux feature to sell the PS3 as a computer (which is not a luxury product) Now They turn the Computer into an entertainment system by removing the OtherOS feature. In my country they call this tax fraud. I'm sure you understand why I think Sony is bsing. They won't get away with this (if this is true).

I'll be happy to sue them and let my government know that they got screwed over hardcore style...

geez most people expect too much of one person, hell if i single handedly hacked a console a fair amount of people would whine to me to give it more and i would be pissed and anyway think of yourself's in geo's shoes with the stress of hacking it and i bet you wouldn't enjoy it much and don't blame him for it being taken away.

if he didn't do it someone else would've and then they would've blamed him/her and they might have said they were nothing etc, and most of you should just hold your breath to see what happens. hopefully a cfw comes out and games will be dumpable and playable without using a B-R disk.

I was long prepared to not be able playing online on my PS3. Imagine if they'd detect CFW PS3's and ban you. Same story.

I won't be a hypocrite on this, since most of my online activity takes place on the PC anyway.

Why would sony wait 9 months to remove something that they could of done in August at the slim launch? for giggles? sony had no problem leaving in other os until news of geohot's hack broke out.

now that i think about it, it may be possible for a class action lawsuit, Sony did push the whole " install Linux on ps3" which prompted consumers to buy it, not to mention the price tag that came with it.

it can be done, "i need to be compensated for the loss occurred due to Sony's malicious ploy to rob first adopting consumers. i was mislead by Sony, when they advertised that online was free & i could install the Linux OS. i feel like i bought a car, & once i got it home, the manufacture call 3 years later, & told me where taking the radio, seat belts, doors, & tires."

I can do a way better job of sounding victimized in person.
