264w ago - Today infamous PS3 hacker GeoHot has blogged that users should not update their PS3 entertainment systems to PS3 Firmware v3.21 when it is released this Thursday as it will disable the OtherOS functionality, and as incentive not to update he has promised the very community he isn't sharing details on how to dump lv2 with that he will work on a solution which could include PS3 Custom Firmware.

To quote: "A note to people interested in the exploit and retaining OtherOS support, DO NOT UPDATE. When 3.21 comes out, I will look into a safe way of updating to retain OtherOS support, perhaps something like Hellcat's Recovery Flasher. I never intended to touch CFW, but if that's how you want to play...

Two things, some people seem to think CFW will enable some sort of piracy. It won't. It'll just be a custom version of 3.21 that doesn't lose OtherOS support. Hacking isn't about getting what you didn't pay for, it's about making sure you do get what you did.

And this is about more than this feature right now. It's about whether these companies have the right to take away advertised features from a product you purchased. Imagine if an exploit were found in Safari on the iPhone, but instead of fixing it, Apple decides to pull web browsing altogether. Legally, they may be within their right to do so, but we have to show them it's the wrong move for the future of the product and the company.

First off, I want to apologize to all the people who use Linux on their PS3. Before releasing, I weighed the pros and cons, and considered the possibility of an impact on OtherOS support.

My logic was this. OtherOS support had already been removed from the Slim (not for technical reasons; I believe it only existed in the first place to promote the Cell for IBM) The builders had apparently no intention of including it in future products. So for the purposes of openness why not release? Not like anything else has (or probably will be) done on the PS3.

Now you go and remove a feature that people expected to be included with the expensive device they purchased, citing "security concerns". What security concerns? It's not like the exploit can be run even close to without the users knowledge.

You have to open the thing up. How could this harm users? Your blog post doesn't list positive reasons for upgrading like I think most users expect. Instead it lists things you will lose if you don't upgrade. Seriously?

The PlayStation 3 is the only product I know that loses features throughout it's life cycle. Software PS2 emulation, SACD playback, and OtherOS support are all just software switches you can flip. It's unbelievable you would go and flip one, not just on new boxes you are shipping, but on tens of millions already in the field."

Here is to hoping GeoHot releases a PlayStation 3 solution in a timely manner, as unfortunately the entire PS3 (and Linux) scene is left waiting on him at the moment.

Yeah, I agree with you on this one.. Every one wants to point the finger at him after the fact; he hacked the system that no one could hack, and we all were excited about it- at least I was.

Now we are all "boo-hoo, its all his fault," over nothing. If you play online and don't use linux, update. You probably don't care enough about homebrew on the PS3 anyway. Why whine and moan?

If you do use linux; don't update unless you just can't live without watching the tester episode 6... oh boy, the fat guy squashed the chick with the metal face!

But those of you like me probably want CFW for all the good stuff that comes along with it and are willing to wait out a little while because I have no idea how to do it- I really can't complain.

Well its a lame move by Sony. And I still think that clown picture is funny as hell!

I imagine there is some legitimate concern about the exploit, but I have a feeling this is something they've wanted long before they even knew who GeoHotz was.

false, it is still in slim but you have to find another exploit to unlock it look at my posts for more advice.

it isn't easy to read without using a lot of methods and trying to figure out what the actual scripts, commands, and executives being ran are doing and what causes each.

I agree on the model number being stored with the checks, but it would surprise me if it was all in one file that could conveniently be hex-edited hehe... I imagine they would be sigchecked and of course you couldn't just "turn on" PS2 support due to a lack of chips, etc but still interesting.

there is a file only visible to a hex editor, or a (zip extraction tool, ftp tool) that has your model number listed along with other models like for slim that disables features on your firmware based on your model number (or hardware versions and firmware of each hardware) so look for it and that is the key to modding a slim (but by backing up a fat modded [model number faked] ps3 and restoring it on a slim) that is all i am allowed to say...

for now till another contract flaw loophole is found...

I was going to link you to it, but I now see it's your own thread.

Anyway, for those who want to read it saviour07 has posted the full TOS here: http://www.ps4news.com/forums/playstation-3-news/sonys-ps3-system-software-license-agreement-terms-service-tos-110346.html

Thing it cost around 3$ or so to include BC. Compare that to PS2s selling for 100 bucks and u can see why they might cut it. Sony is not your family company ppl

OtherOS support, well, we know why that's being removed.

Regardless, Sony are dicks for removing EE+GS chip just to sell more PS2s. I forget the exact number but it turned out each EE+GS chip cost them an insignificant amount so anyone arguing it was to cut costs would look more like a clown than that picture in the first post due to there being numerous other things Sony could have done if production cost was their real concern.

Thanks to those money-grubbing perverts at Sony I have to have both a PS2 and PS3 out at the same time... unless I emulate PS2 games on my PC, but the emulator still need some work.

the best way for those countries to be aware of the "change" of the ps3 from a computer to a game console is for users of the big ps3s to alert their respective governments that they believe sony has committed tax fraud. i'm sure that sony would change their tune if they are faced with tax fraud charges in many countries around the world. it's almost like adopting a kid to get a tax break, then "returning" the kid the following month because you don't want the kid, just the tax break for having a dependent.

The PS3 may be classified as a computer, but it's still a 'computer' that's main purpose is to play games. That's what Sony advertised this system to do. Again, everything else it does is optional.

The logic is kind of flawed to say it's no longer a computer because they take out Other OS. My computer can run and install VLC Media Player (so i can watch .mkv movies). It will also let me install any software I choose to install on it.

Because the PS3 can't do this, does it make it less of a computer? How do you define what is, or isn't a computer?

Yes, Sony may have called it a computer for the tax break, but they still haven't broken any laws by doing this. If you define it by running other apps, it still runs Folding @ Home, which is something any computer can do.

Sony doesn't just have ONE person writing these things up, they have whole legal teams making sure that every little bit of Sony's interests are covered.

I know their only human, but it's also their job (a very expensive one!) and one that invloves knowing that the devil is in the detail, so they will make sure that whatever they come up with is air tight.

That is quite possibly the most redundant and retarded example i've ever been countered with.

If you accept an agreement with a company and they say in it that they reserve the right to remove something at a later date that was their originally, then Sony aren't breaking any laws.

Again... an entire legal team wrote up the contract. If that legal team put something in there that was ILLEGAL then their not a very good legal team now are they?

I'm sorry but i fail to see your counter argument for the fact that you gave an example that has no relevence nor any similarities to the situation at hand.

If your trying to say that Sony are breaking the law by removing the OtherOS feature, then your wrong. If your trying to say that Sony's not allowed to do anything to your system without your approval, then your wrong.

Bottom line... read the TOS that you agreed to and you will understand that the whole "i'm gonna sue Sony" point is moot.

Side Note: I don't mean to go off topic from the OP about GeoHot saying don't update just yet, but some people are really bugging me with the lawsuit talk!

Can someone sticky the TOS of the PS3 so it's easier to refer the people that wanna get all legal on Sony, then they can actually read what they signed up for and stop whining.

The update does not stop the PS3 from being a gaming system, therefore, you have no legal grounds to stand on. Please quit whining about taking legal actions.

The very most you'd get in a lawsuit is your money back for buying the system, nothing more.
