April 6, 2011 // 6:21 am - Update #2: Anonymous have now issued another Press Release essentially stating that they plan to cease the attacks on Sony but intend to pursue other ways of getting Sony's attention.

Update: reports that Sony has now stated the following to their PSN customers regarding the recent attacks, to quote: "If this is indeed caused by such [an] act, we want to once again thank our customers who have borne the brunt of the attack through interrupted service. Our engineers are working to restore and maintain the services, and we appreciate our customers' continued support."

As a follow-up to our previous article, today PlayStation LifeStyle (linked above) interviewed the Anonymous hacking group that has been attacking Sony who states the worst is yet to come, while has shared a fix for those experiencing issues with PSN.

From the PSL interview: "So far, all Sony has seen from us is poking and prodding. A simple salute to let them know, we're coming. Make no mistake, what you saw today and thought to be frustration is merely preparation for what's to come. We said, expect us. Counting us out, would be a mistake.

For the sake of not shooting ourselves in the foot, I won't comment on specific operational tactics we may or may not employ here. I will however say, that if Sony thinks LOIC (Low Orbit Ion Cannon) is the only trick in our hat... they're in for a hell of a wake up call. We're really going all out for this one.

There are many different faces to the operation. Something we encourage is creative thinking. To the consumers I would say... Before you judge us, take the time to understand us."

Anonymous have also made available a new video (below), issued a Press Release admitting that hacking PSN isn't a good idea, but posted what appears to be a list of demands, to quote:

"1. Sony must allow for end-user modification of the PS3, as was available prior to the 3.21 firmware update.

2. Sony must end any attempts to bring legal action to alter a product they own.

3. Sony must not pursue legal action against any collected IP address."

Finally, to quote from on the PSN issue fix: "Here is an alternative: Go to Network Settings - Internet Connection Settings - Custom - Select your connection method - Manual Settings - Scroll through until you get to DNS Settings - Select Manual - Enter for Primary and for Secondary.

Now we should let you know beforehand that this is not a proven method and what is doing is redirecting the DNS (Domain Name Service) from the original PSN servers to google's DNS servers. and are the ip addresses for the official Google DNS. A DNS converts ip addresses into readable website names and assists in related network traffic. According to reports of a good number of users, the fix seems to work for some but not for others."

As much as this is a grey zone, and it's an annoyance, I can't help but smile alittle that Sony has stuff going against them... They screwed so many users over for the last year, and sue everyone left and right (and is doing good at it so far), so I don't feel bad for Sony, was entertaining, while it lasts!

After all their "demands" will never be even considered by Sony, and eventually will end...

Right now its all out virtual war between the Anonymous Hacker Group and Sony, the only reason that they are doing this is because sony is taking people to the cleaners and screwing people over, for jailbreaking, creating homebrew software with open source software and sdks... They are also going after people for bringing back features that they removed...

ok, don't go too far anonymous. do what you want, but don't attack psn, i want to play my games online as usual. i don't copy games, piracy is a shame, if you don't have the money to buy original games, go and get a job!!!! we all know what your group can do, i don't need a proof.
people who use backups online should get banned, thats it!!

According to playstation lifestyle, Sony has enlisted the help of Anti-DDOS specialists Prolexic Technologies in its defense against the hacker group, Anonymous.

Speaking on the Anonymous IRC, several members expressed their frustration at the new defenses, which have (mostly) managed to stop the sites being taken down:
prolexic is holding up

…i doubt we can ddos prolexic

…you wont kill prolexic with l--c

…it’s getting harder to ddos

Of course, while Sony and Prolexic have gained the upper-hand at the moment, the tide could quickly turn back in the hacker’s favor, with some of them working on either bringing down the company’s site, or defacing it (replacing the site or a site page with their own), with users saying:

its be easier to deface their site lol

and that would still be hard

…they slipped up somewhere i bet

Who are Prolexic Technologies?
Prolexic has been fighting DDoS attacks and developing “best of breed” practices and a massive global network for over 7 years. Our experience is simply unmatched.

Prolexic’s services provide online businesses with the most advanced protection available against DDoS attacks and malicious botnet activity.

selfish happily enjoy reaping the benefit of playing backups and using homebrews which came from the efforts of people such as geohot and graf_c... then when these 2 guys are in trouble you selfishly wont support the effort to defend geohot and graf_c just because you cant connect to psn???

1. Some time ago : yea!!! I can play backups and use homebrew thanks're amazing...I love you!!!! screw you sony!!!
2. Now : noooo!!! i cant use psn!!! Sony i love you... screw you hackers!!!

Its unbelievable that this kind of people exists here. And some of them even call themselves a hacker (read above post)...shameful. People need to fight corrupted company like sony as it is violating our rights to things that we bought and own.

So much for Prolexic stopping the attacks at PlayStationEU:

"We are working to restore PSN services as quickly as we can and would like to thank our customers for bearing the interrupted service."
