January 11, 2011 // 8:08 pm - Today JoyStiq (linked above) speculates that based on both a NeoGAF Tip by Mr_Brit and a Digital Foundry report Sony may be planning to remotely disable JailBroken PS3 consoles essentially banning them from PSN.

To quote: "Even if you've never signed up for a PSN account, your console will communicate with Sony servers every time it boots up.

That initial load process is used to upload error logs, download updates to the "What's New" module, and a list of recently-run applications, including any unauthorized backup manager software.

Sony has yet to ban any consoles for taking advantage of the jailbreak, but the terms and conditions of the PlayStation Network make it clear that Sony has the authority to carry them out.

Thanks to the system's constant self-reporting feature, "the company even has the means to irrevocably disable your console should it so wish," rendering affected PS3 consoles unusable, online and off. But will Sony ever use such a drastic measure? And if so, how will the hacker scene retaliate?"

From NeoGAF, to quote: "On boot the system contacts the server and uploads the play list etc. this list alone is enough to get anyone that goes online banned as it shows the bootmanger etc. has been running. Here is the list and what they do, I port sniffed this a while ago before I went online with a retail unit >.> because I am not stupid hehe.

Almost all connections cannot just be port blocked, the port will continue to increment until it connects, you have to block the entire domains. Also a big point is that ALL computers on your network need to have these blocked not just the PS3's MAC because if you are running a proxy for example to get patches, the computer you proxy to will just allow the connections right out to the open unless all local IPs are blocked from these sites as well.

Surprising absolutely noone it looks like Sony are detecting homebrew applications meaning that everyone who went on PSN with a jailbroken console can expect to be banned eventually. This is definitely not the only way that Sony can detect jailbroken systems so we'll never truly ever know if it's going to be safe to go online. That ban may come tommorow or it may come in 6 months time but it will almost certainly eventually come."

I hope they block PSN for everyone that uses a jailbroken ps3... I don't care, hacks would kill online gameplay...

On a side note, how would anyone even know sony disabled your ps3 (If its do-able)? for all we know, some hacker created a virus for open jailbroken consoles or something like that.

I am sure this is illegal, if the console is being monitored before you sign in to PSN, you have not had the opportunity to accept this arrangement. Aside from all the other reasons, this is spying on legitimate customers, something that is illegal in the EU afaik.

Black & White the game did this call home trick and got some flak over it i recall.

If it occurs past the login to psn then that is fine as during initial signup you have to accept the agreement then.

i don't use psn and I don't have my ps3 connected to the internet so short of coming to my house and breaking in theres somewhere in the region of nothing they can do.

Secondly, it's my ps3, i payed for it on release day and I have spent a shed load of my hard earned cash on it. Now I enjoy the power of the ps3 thanks to the clever chaps who hacked it. Everything gets hacked and everything will. By rival companies, by pirates and even by mistake in the odd occasion. The fact is its a part of life.

Sony should look at that other company that has the highest selling condole of all time, you know the one, some sort of station 2 type thing...

Oh wait, that was sony aswell, one of the most hacked consoles and one of the most successful.

Hacking = good if you work with and not against. History shows this.

I'll buy a second console to play online and leave the other one hacked and using for Hombrew as well for pirated games they are not worth the money. If a game is it worth or hase a good online playing system i for sure will buy cause i also want to play online. So they are more hyping with that then anything else.

Beside if they start to complet turn off your con if online or offline then i'm sure we modders, hackers, devers and even normall users will start to havely hack destroing the new system they will release too. We just dont go online and when sony think they can make our consoles unusable for what we have payed money for then they will go down even with a new released console version of the ps3.Look onto psp, there is always a way.

It doesn't matter, when xbox ban waves come people will often trade in there 360, then someone else ends up obtaining it and get banned. MS will not unban that person, and the store will not take the console back either, there's nothing they can do. This doesn't always happen around ban waves, sometimes flashed consoles can be traded in months before then that person will be banned in a few months.

No its perfectly legal for them to ban people from PS3 and PSP, they already have.

That's if they somehow manage to drag someone into a case that deep, which won't happen. I do own the discs and if someone doesn't they can just say their original got destroyed/lost. That's the main purpose of a backup... to be a backup.

Nintendo gets away with more than MS. If you try to install any updates to the wii when it has homebrew on it, it will first remove any homebrew which prevents bricking, then it will tell you that you had homebrew on your console and it refuses to update. The console is then bricked and you can't use the homebrew apps which modify the bootloader to make the console unbrickable because the update removes them before it bricks the console.

I'm not gonna pretend to be an expert here but let's point out the obvious

A) Anyone who is hacking a console and going online with it is looking to get banned eventually

B) There is no way sony is gonna disable the ps3's remotely, they can and will ban people from psn because that's a service and within their right to do so but people have bought the console and they own it. There would be so much backlash if sony even thought of disabling consoles they could possibly flush a release of ps4 right down the toilet just out of people boycotting sony. As far as I'm concerned this is beyond debate, I bought the console and can do whatever the hell I want with it.

If I buy a game, I can do whatever the hell I want with it, nobody is claiming to have invented the console or the games, and sony is still getting paid through their psn, charging like $15 for games that came out a decade ago, This is going to increase buys of the ps3 now on top of that, because people can run their own homebrew, if sony actually went out of their way to ruin peoples shit after they qoute their system can do "everything" but really can't and so people are filling in the gaps.

If they brick peoples ps3s for that, expect people to bite back. Sony is doing the right thing now in my opinion, updating the firmware and locking people out of the psn who hack. That's fair. But if they had all these people come out and say screw you for disabling linux, imagine what would happen if they flat out disabled the console? something to think about.
