February 23, 2011 // 2:56 pm - Today an anonymous user has released PlayStation File System Libraries on PS3-Hacks (linked above) allowing NTFS support finally on PS3 for homebrew applications.

To quote: "I'm out of town leaving me PS3-less, so I'm unable to test this... This being a library, PlayStation File System Libraries - libpfsm, that you can use when building your homebrew projects, i.e.) Gaia Manager.

And the Gaia Manager source is included and comes pre-modified as an example adding NTFS (libpfsm) support. You just need to build it now and I'm sure someone'll do that real soon.

What does PlayStation File System Libraries feature?

  • Support for multiple simultaneously connected devices.
  • Hot swapping of devices.
  • Support for multiple partitions (with different FS).
  • NTFS support
    o Alternate data streams
    o Sparse files
    o File compression
    o B+ trees directory
  • FAT support
    o FAT12, FAT16, FAT32
    o Long file names (VFAT)

Writing to NTFS formatted volumes is not supported and not planned. Check the README for everything else.

I have not tested but there is a GAIA MANAGER in the archive and i'm not sure if it has this lib implement to work with NTFS as of yet??...

What about the PS3's file format? Because we can format to it using the XMB, shouldn't we be able to reverse engineer it and format external drives using it as well? I imagine this would require that someone creates a file manager for PC so that would could access the files (much like the Wii). But this would be awesome. I really don't want to muck around with my PS3s internal drive.

Probably because most people don't compile their programs. They just wait for a built-up package

But seriously I truly appreciate the idea and effort, although it looks like it is going to be a one man that does the job. Everyone will be relying the person's free time and "pushing" him/her to "add my favorite filesystem". If the author made the code available (note it may not be such a good idea), other people can use his work and expand the functionality.

Just my 2c.

But we can use 2 partitions 1 FAT for music, videos etc... and another one on ntfs for backup games

yep its read-only, and only accessible via a homebrew application.

This will mean the following -
1, If you want to play a game, just copy it from your repository on your huge NTFS drive to the internal drive, launch and play!
2, Somehow integrating it into the XMB, maybe forcing the Hypervisor/GameOS to load the library on boot, so allow it to auto-mount the NTFS drive like it does with normal FAT32 USB drives.

Anyway its a step forward in the right direction!

BTW, can someone compile the gaia source included ? We have to test that !

It is certainly a step in the right direction. Hopefully the library can be expanded to allow write support and allow for reading of NTFS volumes after a homebrew app (i.e. BuM) has been closed.

Oh yes, I see this coming. Multiple partitions, Hot swapping and NTFS support and anything what is mentioned under the point. That will be so great to see what we can build with this files !
