its actually running on the Unreal engine - noted when you load it up.

Yep its definitely an Adults game. Funny though.

Did some background reading on the development of this game (being a fan of the original DOS Duke games), and I was shocked to know that Gearbox had less than a year (roughly?) to port this to consoles. Seems to be using the Doom 3 engine, which is why it reminded me of Prey. Here's a link I found (for those that are interested):

I mean, kudos to Gearbox and 3D Realms for not letting it die - I just wish it were more polished (jaggies and load times are horrible). Overall, I do enjoy the game though, many chuckle moments like the turd burglar, and the over-supportive soldier at the whiteboard.

had a good play of it last night, did a few levels.. its definitely one for those who had played the original Duke Nukem 3D. So many quotes from that, remakes of old music and hes just so full of himself haha plus I see why it gets a 18+ rating.

The odd thing was though, near the start - after the first battle - Duke's holding a controller for his own video game, and it resembles an Xbox 360 controller skinned with himself etc. This was wierd seeing it on a PS3 game.

Other things to add - this game needs anti-aliasing turned on.. jagged edges everywhere. That being said - I loved every minute of it, and wished I could've played it all night. (True Duke 3D fan!)

I always like games to be challenging, so I often opt for the hardest difficulty to start on. This game punishes you for choosing that difficulty, as each time you die, the game acts like it needs to load the entire level over again.

So... What? The game loads the level onto the hard drive, and, when you die, the aliens of the game delete all cache? Come on. I understand not rushing perfection, but... COME ON!

Yeah there is those that are hyped which end up sucking or simply not living up to the expectations. Brink and HF definitely come to mind with that. But those were pretty risky games anyway, as we all pretty much had a feeling they were going to be hit or miss. I have several lists I keep so I can remember what games I might want to check out, Brink and Socom 4 are on my main list but I had suspicions they weren't going to be very good. Luckily I managed to avoid buying either of them and am glad I did. I rented HF for the SP, it was Ok but not worth $60.

Out of the list I wrote up there there is two potential games that might end up being not so great that haven't released yet, Deus Ex and Twisted Metal. Deus Ex will probably be good, but Twisted metal has a good chance of failing. The rest of the games on my list that haven't come out yet, at least for me, are going to be day 1 buys regardless of the hype they receive as I know I won't be let down. There are just some games out there that you know will be good, Resistance 3, Uncharted 3, AC:Revelations and BF3 are those kinds of games. Probably because they are being made by some of the best and most experienced developers in the world. Whereas Brink and HF are basically made by nobody developers.

And while Duke Nukem Forever has seasoned developers behind it, they are very rusty when it comes to making games this gen. From the videos I have seen and articles I have read, DNF definitely misses the mark and will be another one of those letdowns. If I was you, rent the game.

i'll agree portal 2 is amazing.. got it nand at first thought what's this crap.. but after 1/2 hour i see what the fuss is about.. one of the best games ever.. as for the rest kz3 ok crysis 2 ok.. actually pretty good.. la noire.. excellent.

res 3 and bf 3 etc... i'm not gonna speculate.. the rest i'm not that fussed over.. will try mass effect 2 from your review.. but what about all these games they hype up and are garbage.. in my opinion they are garbage.

i'm sorry for offending the person who says well it takes a lot to make a game and can you do better,... LOL i was looking so forward to brink and homefront and imo they suck big time.. anyway i'm asking is duke any good.. i've seen conflicting reviews.

this really annoys me, putting out games that are hyped fully, then it being crap.. like brink for eg.. i guess if you hype it its gonna sell..
i hope batt 3 and resist 3 are great otherwise the year will have been a big let down..

You mean for online games? Cause if you count in the SP + MP games released this year, it is one hell of a lineup for AAA games. Makes 2010 look like a video game depression.

Here is my short list:

Mass Effect 2 - Absolutely amazing game that everybody should play
Killzone 3 - Good SP and MP is okay
Crysis 2 - Never played the MP but the SP was very fun
Portal 2 - Simply amazing
Infamous 2 - Playing it now, and loving every minuet
Red Faction: Armageddon - Will be playing this after I finish I2, but the demo was extremely fun
Deus Ex: Human Revolution - I loved the previous deus Ex games, and I love futuristic RPG's.
Resistance 3 - Should have pretty decent SP and MP
Twisted Metal - Vehicular online combat anyone? Oh yeah!
Uncharted 3 - Nuff said, anybody who owns a PS3 should buy this game.
Assassins Creed: Revelations - I thoroughly enjoyed all the previous AC titles, and I doubt this will disappoint
and Battlefield 3 - Never got into the previous BF online games, but this one is promising a lot.

Even with my list, which is probably shorter than many others lists, is quite an amazing selection for this year. We will not see another game lineup like this for at least another 2-3 years, maybe never. So if this year was a letdown for you, then it is likely you will be letdown from here on out. Because this is about as good as it gets.

Sure 2012 has some great stuff lined up like Starhawk, Dust514, Metal Gear Solid: Rising and Mass Effect 3, but it is dwarfed in comparison to what 2011 has to offer.
