84w ago - Today German site Computerbild.de have shared preliminary details and pictures on how to swap in / upgrade a PS4 HDD on the PlayStation 4 video game console.

To quote: "German tech site Computer Bild has gotten their hands on a PlayStation 4 console and show us all how to open it up to swap out the HDD via a few pictures.

It seems like a simple enough process and there is also a fancy, customized PlayStation screw that has the Square, X, Circle, and Triangle symbols we all know and love. The HDD is under the piano black plastic and it seemingly pops right off to allow users access to the internal workings of the PS4.

This is great news for PlayStation fans everywhere, since one of the best things about owning a PlayStation 3 is the ability to swap out hard drives for bigger ones. Considering the amount of digital content PlayStation Plus subscribers are in for, this has always been a godsend.

Sony recognized that this ability would give gamers even more options to customize their PlayStations according to the storage sizes they needed, and so they've aptly and, let's be honest, graciously added in this feature for the PS4. However, it's truly no surprise that this feature had made it on to the next-generation.

It wouldn't bode over well with the fanbase if they are able to upgrade the HDD on PS3 and have the privilege to do so taken away on the PS4. Not to mention it remained easily accessible as it did on the original PS3. To access the HDD on that one, all you had to do was pop open a small compartment, take out the screw, and access was granted; swap to your heart's desire."

Finally, in related news below are another few videos detailing How to Connect a PlayStation 4 Controller to a PS3, as follows:

Update: Below are some dedicated PS4 HDD / SSD Upgrade Kits (via DualShockers.com) with up to 1.5 TB which claim to be 25% faster loading with SSD, to quote as follows:

"Woodstock-based hardware retailer Other World Computing released four upgrade kits dedicated to the PS4, offering four different ways to upgrade the stock 500 GB HDD coming with Sony's New Console.

The options offered include a 1 TB HDD/SDD hybrid drive (eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/SPS4H5Y1.0/) or a 1.5 TB HDD (eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/SPS4H5H1.5/) if you want more space to download more content. Alternatively, if you prefer speed you can choose between a 240 GB SSD (eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/SPS4SSD240/ - (which could definitely prove a little a little tight) and a more reasonable 480 GB SDD (eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/SPS4SSD480/).

Why would you want to actually reduce the space available in your PS4′s disk? According to the retailer the SDD options offer 25% faster load, saving and booting times. Faster times are also promised for the 1TB HDD/SDD hybrid, but the actual gain isn't specified. Your mileage may vary on whether faster loading speed is worth the trade off or not.

Together with the selected HD the bundle also include the following items:

  • OWC USB 3.0 Express 2.5″ SATA Drive Enclosure, Black
  • OWC USB 2.0 Flash Drive for PlayStation 4 download
  • #1 Phillips screwdriver
  • Up to 3-Year Replacement Warranty
  • High Quality Double Shielded USB 3.0 (mini-B type) connecting cable
  • Carrying sleeve
  • OWC USB 3.0 Express Enclosure Installation Guide
  • Instruction Guide for Drive Upgrade for PS4

Prices are as follows:

  • 1 TB HDD/SDD hybrid drive: $99.99
  • 1.5 TB HDD:$149.99
  • 240 GB SSD: $219
  • 480 GB SDD $399

Considering that I've seen the same drives sold by themselves for similar or higher prices by other retailers, this deal definitely seems a sweet one if you want to upgrade your new PS4, even if I'm not sure the 240 GB option can really be considered workable, SSD or not."

Those have been available since the dawn of SATA. A single extender cable that has both the main SATA cable and power cable. The PS4 doesn't support external HDDs?

The PS4 FAQ states no bigger than 9.5mm in height, so this HDD is good news.

I'd like to know when this will be available for purchase and the price.

I went with one of those external connectors lastgen but due to the location of the HDD in the new PS4 it doesn't look like it would look too pretty having a cable run out of the top of the unit, and would probably require a custom coverplate to allow the cable to pass through.

I'm also curious if having the empty space where the HDD is suppose to be would disrupt the intended design of airflow to the components, increasing the risk of overheating.

The other thing is the PS4 FAQ does not mention any capacity limitation, however we all know drivers with more than 1TB of storage wouldn't recognize on the PS3, so i'd like to know if there is a limitation on the PS4 as well.

Following up on the How to Swap In / Upgrade a PS4 HDD guide, today it has been confirmed that the recently released Seagate Spinpoint M9T (measuring just 9.5 mm thick) 2TB HDD is small enough to fit in a PlayStation 4 console.

To quote: Seagate recently released a new 2TB HDD, only that this time its the smallest 2TB HDD currently in existence. Its small enough to fit a PS4 console and and a laptop.

The drive is manufactured in China under the company's Samsung hard disk drive (HDD) division, reportedly sporting the highest platter density of any 2.5 inch hard drive to date, with 667 GB of capacity per platter.

"The M9T combines the highest areal density shipping in a single storage device with an innovative design that fits into mainstream notebook applications. While other 2TB solutions on the market are 15 mm thick, the vast majority of mobile devices are designed to use a 9.5 mm drive; with the M9T, those devices can now have 2TB of storage, enabling a richer computing experience," said Dave Frankovich, senior product line manager, Samsung HDD.

For the uninitiated, Seagate bought Samsung Electronics' hard drive business back in December 2011, gaining "select elements" including Samsung's M8 product line of high-capacity, 2.5-inch HDDs, the employees and infrastructure. At the time, N.Y. Park, senior vice president and general manager, would oversee Seagate's product development activities in Korea and serve as country manager of the Korea design center, reporting to Bob Whitmore, Seagate's executive vice president and CTO.

"Seagate is supplying disk drives to Samsung for PCs, notebooks and consumer electronics devices," Seagate's press release stated in 2011. "Samsung is supplying its market-leading semiconductor products for use in Seagate's enterprise solid state drives (SSDs), solid-state hybrid drives and other products. The companies have also extended and enhanced their existing patent cross-license agreement and have expanded cooperation to co-develop enterprise storage solutions."

Although there are 2 TB notebook drives already on the market, these measure either 12.5 mm or 15 mm in thickness. Frankovich told Computerworld that the industry has built three- and four-platter drives before, but typically a three-disk drive would be in a 12.5 mm thickness and a four-disk drive would be in a 15 mm thickness.

"So they kind of got relegated to external drives at that thickness. This is really the first time you're seeing this capacity in the mainstream 9 mm form factor," he said. Frankovich also added that Seagate was able to increase its platter areal density by creating a dual-stage actuator head. One head is used for read and writes, and the other is for keeping the actuator arm secure and in place.

The Spinpoint M9T will also arrive in a 1.5 TB flavor, and both will pack microactuation, a SATA 3 interface for speeds up to 6 Gbps, along with NoiseGuard and SilentSeek technologies to deliver ultra-quiet operation. The drives also use 2.3 watts of power during read/write operations, and 0.7 watts while idling.

The Spinpoint M9T hard drive is currently available in the Samsung Portable product line, which includes the M3 Portable and P3 Portable external drives, as well as with select partners. Pricing is not available, as this drive is sold directly to equipment manufacturers.

Finally, some other confirmed working HDD's with the PS4 / PlayStation 4 include:
