To quote: If you instantly watch movies and TV shows from Netflix on your PS3, here is the news you've been waiting for: starting Monday, October 18 you'll be able to instantly watch movies and TV shows without inserting an instant streaming disc into your console.

In addition to eliminating the disc, there is a new user interface that brings a much richer and faster browsing experience, content search directly on the device, and dramatic improvements in how fast playback starts.

There is even more good news for PS3 owners: starting on Monday you'll be able to instantly watch some movies and TV shows in 1080i 1080p high definition, listen to Dolby 5.1 channel surround sound, and view an increasing portion of our content library with subtitles.

This will bring the home theater experience right to your living room and make instantly watching movies even more enjoyable. Here's a news release from Netflix and Dolby with details.

Check out these improvements and continue to enjoy watching TV shows and movies streamed from Netflix.

Since the wii and ps3 went disk-less at the same time I'm guessing they were itching to leave that paradigm. Furthermore this only helped sony because the more shit that has to go through the PSN the more they force people to update. It's a very win win for sony.

Everyone can argue that Sony is being asshats about this but from a business perspective this is a pure win situation. They would be stupid not to do.

It should only be an optional update though..not a force. Some people do want to keep and utilize OtherOS. This is just another stab at these people taking away yet another feature.

I like it. I hated having to keep that disc near by.

This is even more fuel to hack the crap out of this console. Keep taking away features Sony... we'll just keep opening up the system for everyone to hack it even easier and not give u a cent more on software sales.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll see about getting the package and begin working on it.

I'm too new to this but heck it'll be something to do.

You can download and install the pkg file without psn but when you try to run the app it gives you a message that you need to be on 3.42. The pkg needs to be modified somehow to remove this requirement.

If I were to select "Install Netflix Now" would it re-direct me to the PS store to download the application or is there a chance that the app can be downloaded from Netflix? Given that I am still on 2.74 I do no want to risk selecting "Install Netflix Now" for fear that there will be no way to back out.

no I did that my disc is useless now, it tells you to go to PSN to download it though your PS3.

I hope it doesn't require an upgrade.

If it does, it will be just another hit to 3.15 users that chose the "Option" to keep OtherOS.

(Now, what ever happend to those OtherOS Lawsuits... no one seems to talk about them anymore... )
