214w ago - Update: Sony has now done as expected and reissued the PS3 Firmware 3.56 update. More details to come as they are available (PUP SHA1/MD5 hash comparison HERE) on whether it remedies the PlayStation 3 HDD upgrade issues or not.

Some may recall Sony quietly reissued PS3 Firmware 3.41 to rectify issues for PlayStation 3 HDD upgraders, and today Examiner.com (linked above) reports the same remedy may be necessary in the recently released PS3 Firmware 3.56.

To quote: "According to users on NeoGAF and HighDef Forum, the 3.56 firmware prevents the newer PlayStation 3 models (with 16 MB flash) from being upgradeable to a new hard disk drive. The following models have been affected:

Original PlayStation 3 Model:

•CECHH
•CECHJ
•CECHK
•CECHL
•CECHM
•CECHP
•CECHQ

Slim PlayStation 3 Model:

• CECH-20..A
• CECH-20..B
• CECH-21..A
• CECH-21..B
• CECH-250.A
• CECH-250.B
• CECH-250.A
• CECH-250.B
• CECH-251.A
• CECH-251.B

Apparently this was an old bug that has appeared before in a previous firmware update that was eventually fixed. Hopefully, Sony can fix it again in a timely matter."

Anyone recall people claiming that 'x.x' firmware messed up their blu-rays too? I remember this back before the 3.0 update.

But as of yet, no firmware I've ever installed has given me problems. (Aside from stuff being removed that is )

Seems very unlikely that an official 3.55 to official 3.56 update would brick any ps3. More likely that an update from a tampared firmware to ofw would cause these issues.

forget terms and conditions, since everyone downloads the same firmware as long as it works on 1 ps3 of each sku there's no problem with the update. And people can cry mass bricking all they like, I've never come across one thats been bricked by an official firmware update.

even if there is somewhere in terms and condition that says sony cant take responsibilty for their FW, the updates are made MANDATORY for users if they want to be able to have continused access to there purchases. I know there are those that will say its terms and conditons, but terms and conditions dont always hold up in the courts, also keep in mind that the user manual might say that sony cant be held responsible for any damage to your NEW HDD, correct but the issue this ofw is causing is to the PS3 hardware itself, there is no issues at all with the hdd's.

I'd say if there is so many issues with 3.56 ofw it's time for the REAL professionals to release 3.56 CFW since the amateurs 3.56 ofw is briking so many units

Sony must have lawyers on speed-dial! They sue people left and right for the hacks, LG suing them and there has been a case where someone sued (and won) over the OtherOS removal! Keep Sony in court for their BS.

"Some of you may have had your PS3 system bricked by update/virus 3.56 from Sony. So have hundreds of others. Read about it on the Sony forums here: http://community.eu.playstation.com/t5/Technical-Support-Help-Advice/System-Update-3-56-Data-Corrupted-after-Swap-HDD/td-p/12309619/page/65

We are currently preparing a class action lawsuit against Sony. A petition will be available on that forum and Facebook shortly. Stay tuned."
