November 4, 2011 // 6:58 am - Previously Sony confirmed that PSN users can activate downloaded games on to up to five different PS3 or PSP systems, but today PlayStation Network Operations VP Gordon Thornton has announced this policy is being changed to only two- possibly to curb game sharing.

One alternative for those on PS3 Custom Firmware is to check out the PlayStation 3 homebrew exdata license reactivation tool ReActPSN which currently reactivates PlayStation Network data.

To quote: We'd like to inform you of some upcoming changes to the usage policies for PlayStation Network game content.

As of November 18, 2011, the number of devices that can be activated on one PlayStation Network account for game content purchased from the PlayStation Store will be updated.

For game content purchased after November 18, 2011, a new policy will apply and the number of devices that can be activated will be as follows:

•PS3: Users will be able to play the game on up to 2 activated PS3 systems.
•PSP: Users will be able to play the game on up to 2 activated PSP systems.

Please note that this update will not affect game content purchased before November 18. The PSP rights include PSP-1000/2000/3000 series as well as the PSPgo system.

PlayStation Network users are able to change the activation setting through each device, and Sony Computer Entertainment plans to provide a new PlayStation Network account management Web site where users will be able to deactivate particular devices attached to their PlayStation Network account via their PC.

For more details on how to activate/deactivate the devices, please read this guide or contact consumer services.

Finally, Sony notes that game content, including PSone Classics and Minis, purchased from the PlayStation Store after November 18, will be playable on up to 2 PS3 systems and up to 2 portable systems, including PSP, PSPgo and Vita.

This is just an attempt to get people purchasing more stuff off the PSN store. They know many people share accounts so they can also download a DLC or a game without having to pay for it. This is also similar to what is happening with the online passes where you have to go and buy a separate pass to play online if the game is second hand.

Sony just want people buying more games to make more money, I'm okay with that but not when they do stuff like this. This is why more people pirate games instead of buying them.

And yet again this makes me appreciate my preference of buying disc based games over digital downloaded games anyday.

They did indeed:

Thanks a lot $ony, convincing me that Jailbraking is the future for PS3 I own 3 consoles and have always purchased the map packs once and downloaded them onto my consoles, then when my mates come over we can all play together in my games room but I'm certainly not paying £35.00+ for each COD Map Pack plus the (£120.00 I already paid for the game, 3 copy's of COD 4, 5, 6, 7 and soon to be MW3...

Fingers Crossed, Sony DON'T MAKE THIS MOVE... Otherwise prepare to loose $$$ NOT ACTUALLY GAIN ANYTHING FROM ME!

Such a sad day in the PlayStation World...

Just make sure that on November 17th, anyone you Gameshared with previously, you download anything new that they have gotten, otherwise you probably won't be able to [Unless it doesn't force you to remove previous activations].

It would be much more reasonable if Sony just applied this to new activations (so lets say I only have 1 activation on my account currently, then after the 18th, I'd only be able to have 1 more; or if I only have 1 activation currently, I can get 4 more right now, and those don't expire].

Do you really think Sony care about what the consumers think?

They are only in it for the money and the more ways to make money the less they care about the consumers.
