March 21, 2013 // 10:24 am - Following up on the PS3 Firmware v4.31 update, today Sony has officially released PlayStation 3 System Software update v4.40 with details below.

Download: PS3 Firmware 4.40 Update (US) / PS3 Firmware 4.40 Update (EU) / Extracted PUP by MorozzNL / PS3 4.40 CoreOS.rar by hellsing9

While there is no official changelog available yet, it is a required (mandatory) update although nothing appears to be different from the previous firmware revision on the surface.

However, Sony's Japanese site notes new support for a particular NFC reader, the Sony RC-S380 card reader device, has been added alongside improved system stability.

For those unaware, it's a USB Near Field Communication (NFC) device that reads contact-less IC cards which has been out in Japan, Europe and America since last year.

To quote, roughly translated: The main features updated in version 4.40

  • I corresponding to (RC-S380 Sony Corporation products) IC card reader / writer PaSoRi non-contact.
  • [Closed Captions] has been added as a feature under (Video Settings).
  • The system software to improve the stability of the operation.

Update: Official Sony 4.40 Changelog:

  • System software update 4.40 will allow users to download content purchased from our online store to their PS3. This feature is not available yet and will be activated in May 2013. Keep an eye on for a detailed guide explaining how to make the most of this feature.
  • System software stability during use of some features has been improved.

  • The wireless stereo headset (CECHYA-0080 / CECHYA-0086) and the stereo headset (CECHYA-0088) now support PlayStation 2 Classics that have been downloaded from PlayStation Store.

Extracted PUP details: By the filenames it seems that they are also pushing a new Blu-ray firmware to perhaps block the ODE.

From bubba: 3K3y is working on 4.40. Woot they didn't stop them.

From Sony PS3 hacker Cyberskunk: You know any of you guys can pull this fw apart.. They did not change any keys.. even in the core..

PSN passphrase has not changed either.. So just change the build number and version number in your spoof files and of course the index.dat if you want to connect. If you unpack it you can just grab the files out of it.. For CEX grab these files...

On your ps3 rename...

vsh.self to vsh.self.bak
index.dat to index.dat.bak
version.txt to version.txt.bak

Using FTP or filemanager copy the new files over to the PS3 remembering to remove the .swp and .cexsp extentions. OR Just wait a bit while i finish updating the Version Spoofer for other firmwares..

From eussNL: FW 4.40 adds support for RC-S380 (a Sony NFC reader) and system stability stuff.. its firmware for new drive model 0xC (, an update for the 0xA - not for the rest no syscon updates, no key changes, nothing that prevents downgrading either.

Use devmount (can be enabled in multiman or used separately) for above mentioned files named as:

  • index.dat.swp as /dev_mount/vsh/module/index.dat
  • version.txt.swp as /dev_mount/vsh/etc/version.txt
  • vsh.self.cexsp as /dev_mount/vsh/module/vsh.self

I don't know if it's more stable or not, but I know they got a fix out pretty damn quick, offline for a few hours, and now sorted.

I'm on SGK 4.31 got online finally yesterday, I just got Internet set up. Spent the night playing online for the first time in a while. Got no access today.

I hope a pkg install can spoof this back up in the next few days, not even 24h online

If your using the Regug 4.30.x CFW, just apply the new update that spoofs it to 4.40 (found on here), and your back online again (via the Rebug Mode) makes me glad I chose Rebug over Rogero now.

It's for Retail consoles, and usually the Debug / Test / DEX version surfaces anywhere from a few days to a few weeks afterwards.

Hi, I'm new here. Actually been lurking for a while but never posted. I have a question about this 4.40 update. Is the update linked here for retail kits or Test kits? If it's retail, has a comparable update for the Test kits come out yet?
