Sony Hires Former Homeland Security Boss for PSN Security

186w ago - Today Reuters (linked above) reports that Sony has hired the former director of the U.S. National Cyber Security Center Philip Reitinger to oversee PSN security in an effort to prevent further breaches in their network.

To quote: "Certainly the network issue was a catalyst for the appointment," a Sony spokesman said. "We are looking to bolster our network security even further."

Shares in Sony have fallen 55 percent since the company revealed the hacking on April 27, sparking widespread criticism and casting a shadow over its plans for expansion in online businesses including music and movie distribution.

Concerns about losses in the TV department and the yen's rise against the euro have also contributed to Sony's woes.

Reitinger, who has also worked for Microsoft and the U.S. Department of Defense, will be based in Washington."

Back in the days of the SNES... what could go wrong? Even after a few bevvies you could still manage to fit mariokart in the console even with double vision. Good old days eh?

Let us not forget how long it really took to hack the PS3 and only afterwards did the PSN debacle happen purely as a result of the way $ony handled the hackers!

IMHO, I reckon they are better of getting a hacker to help with the securities - Mathlieuh and Egosnot offerd their services ...

I think this is more about Sony learning from their mistakes and moving forward with a better (online) strategy.

1. Providing better protection for their online customers.
2. Boosting confidence in their online security.
3. Boosting confidence in their shareholders about their online security.

Bottom line is that while this may actually be a pragmatic move by Sony, this is also a PR move too. Not every hiring by a computer game company gets announced unless Sony wants it announced!
