Sony Confirms DC Universe PS3 Discs Locked to Single Account

216w ago - Update: Dutch site PS3Clan.nl has now confirmed that it is indeed possible to share your DC Universe Online PS3 disc with a friend and play the game for free, noting simply that both users will need to pay the subscription fee.

While not as bad as previous rumors, today LazyGamer.net (linked above) reports that Sony has confirmed DC Universe Online PS3 discs are locked to a single PSN account connected to their first player.

Essentially what this means is when you buy and play DC Universe Online, your PSN account will be automatically tied with that specific PlayStation 3 game disc.

If other PSN accounts try to play the game using that disc, they will be denied. Only you, the first player, will be able to play it.

To quote: "We discovered that DC Universe becomes linked to your account when you activate it, destroying your ability to sell it, trade it or rent it.

The folks at SOE were very quick to respond to our enquiry, and they had the following to say:

"Once the PSN key has been consumed with a disk it cannot be resold/replayed with the second user adding a sub - only the original consumer can use that acct."

We weren't too sure if that meant that a new code could be obtained by a second hand buyer, or if the disc and account were seen as one, so we wrote back and got the simple and straightforward answer that: "Disk and account are one"

So there you have it, confirmed from SOE themselves. Once you have bought DC Universe Online, it will not be usable by anyone other than the original user of the activation key.

So once again, be warned: If you see the game for sale second hand without its original activation key (highly unlikely) or want to sell it off, it doesn't work that way."

More than likely, they already do this for a number of different games.

I personally will not be buying this, but not because I'm boycotting, but because I wasn't impress with the beta right up to release. If I was to buy this at all in the future it would be for PC anyway and they'd need to add a ton more stuff for me to even consider it.

Understandable but still I know it kind of sucks. I'm not too shocked about the decision though.

To be honest it does seem crazy in my opinion to lock the game disc to the account that you couldn't trade, rent or resale the disc. But as far as people complaining its expensive, that only makes me believe that those particular players do not play real pay to play MMORPG's at all.

Whether is Phantasy Star, Final Fantasy Online, World of Warcraft or whatever, you do have to pay to play them online and its been that way for YEARS. I honestly haven't been on MMORPG's long having only played Phantasy Star Universe on a console but I understood the deal upon playing.

Before this title's release I've heard from too many people on PSN hoping for it to be free to play online. You can't alway's expect everything to be free and sometimes free doesn't garuntee its always going to be good. You get what you pay for.

Its funny how some players will say a game is trash because it's not free and have never even played a beta of it to know what its like. If this is the first pay to play game on the PS3 whether you want to boycott it or not, don't expect it it to be the last.

This. Thing is, a disc-to-console marriage would have to be validated online through some database, so offline games could still be sold and played. A scheme like this is ridiculous, especially for those with multiple consoles in the house.

Exactly. I doubt there is a key you enter when you get the disc. It is still a console game and what they seem to have done is to integrate the key into the disc so it is detected automatically and tied to ur account. You won't be able to register a new account with the same disc.

Piracy is not a reason for this and even second hand sales wouldn't be a reason. the thing is a sub based game so they should have no reason to worry about such things (ask WoW). This COULD be a trial for future implementations.

Unfortunately for consoles you need the disc to actually play the game so someone passing on the disc won't get them more costumers but it won't hurt them either since disc sales shouldn't be their main source of income on a sub based game. They SHOULD even offer the client up for free download if they had sense (we all know that sony doesn't). I can get the WoW client free easily from blizzard but most companies are greedy idiots who will never get it right and wonder why they fail.

Just want to reiterate what everyone else has said... DO NOT BUY THIS GAME OR ANY OTHER GAME THAT SUPPORTS THIS SCHEME.

Piracy will be used as the excuse that this is "needed" but what they really want to do is kill the second hand trade-in market because they are so greedy they believe that they should get more money, even after they were payed, if someone decides to trade it in. First sale doctrine be damned.

Greed is the only reason these things happen. Do not purchase or play games like this, or you are supporting a miserable future. Teach these people a lesson. Do not listen to their whining, there will always be plenty of games to play in the future, just avoid the ones like this.

i bought this game for my son and bought the limited edition pack with the batman character and all the extras...

Man he does love this game, but the disc came in a cardboard sleeve which completely ruined the disc... Took it back to Best Buy minus the game book with the serial code on it... Now i have a serial code for my PSN acct and i can play with my son online.

Thank Best Buy for allowing me to use one disc on 2 PSN Accts...
