April 9, 2010 // 2:16 pm - Despite some refunds being granted, today Sony UK has officially apologized for the OtherOS removal in the recently released PS3 Firmware 3.21 update citing PS3 piracy concerns as the underlying factor.

To quote from Sony's official statement to (linked above):

"We are sorry if users of Linux or other operating systems are disappointed by our decision to issue a firmware upgrade which when installed disables this operating system feature.

We have made the decision to protect the integrity of the console and whilst mindful of the impact on Linux or other operating system users we nevertheless felt it would be in the best interests of the majority of users to pursue this course of action.

As you will be aware we have upgraded and enhanced functionality and features of the console by numerous firmware upgrades over time and this is a very rare instance where a feature will be disabled. Further enhancements are in the pipeline.

Users do have the choice whether to install the firmware upgrade and this is clearly explained to them at the time the firmware upgrade is made available for installation. Furthermore our terms and conditions clearly state that we have the right to revise the PS3's settings and features in order to prevent access to unauthorised or pirated content."

Is somebody from MS now running Sony? It appears that the person making all the calls clearly has no understanding of piracy and what the customers want.

I am surprised they don't release a firmware update to VAIO computers that would eliminate linux or try to! I bought the PS3 on PS2 backwards compatibility and the Linux feature. Both have been removed from the slim models and now they have gone too far.

I hope this move costs them dearly since they think they are above the will and desire of the people that support them.

I will quit rambling before my blood pressure boils over!

They should have released this apology at the same time they released the update. Not that I'd be any happier about it, but it'd lessen the blow. As it stands though, this is too little too late.

I still can't believe how dumb was that move. What about the universities that buy hundreds of Ps3 to make supercomputers? I dunno but, It seems lately Sony is doing stupid stuff.

I see some folks on the Sony forum saying they want Sony to give them a free game for removing Other OS. I really doubt these folks use Linux on their PS3, and are just wanting something for free. A game is not an equivalent substitution for an Operating System.

But for those who use Linux on their PS3, and Sony says GameOS cannot coexist with Linux on the same hardware for fear of hacking, then Sony needs to replace what they removed with an equivalent. Sony needs to provide an equivalent cell-based computer with Linux and all other features within the PS3 that can be accessed in Linux (bluetooth, wireless network and game controllers, BlueRay drive, hard drive, etc) without cost, at any point while we own our PS3. (That is what we had before 3.21). Zero cost (not even shipping because the PS3 Sony degraded is already in our houses). Those who really used Linux will ask for one. All those who really didn't use/want Linux, won't ask for it (or will just on principle of the matter).

P.S. That still doesn't fix my problem - being locked out of the PSN store because I chose to run older firmware. I think it's just so wrong to need to hack into a store to buy something...

ok I stand corrected then. I knew of exceptions like Pain, but didn't know there were others. (Though I still think Pain takes the award for the worst trophy requirements ever). I based my belief on the fact that Flower was fairly easy to plat on. Even though, still, someone mentioned that the level calculation is off, which could be I'm at 6 I think, so I don't know what it does after 10.

I do know that the cost of the PSN games, even though their trophies (you have shown) are equally as much a PITA, they are far cheaper, making it easier to trophy spam your account. I think a better ultimate/overall calculation would be how many of the games in your trophy list are plat'ed, not ok well this person got 1 silver here, 1 silver there, 1 silver there, so forth and so on; because under that model it's whoever has the most money to spend on games they throw away basically.

But i was thinkng about a thing... If i pay for something for example i payed for a laptop, it's mine, so if i want to open it, install a new cpu, maybe changing a gpu with some trick or what else, who can came to me and stop me doing that? Why? That stuff is mine i can do whatever i want. So they are right if they want to disable whatever they want but they can't think that users just hold on without doing nothing.

Anyway psp is hacked and as someone said games stopped to develop (not really). What about wii and xbox360? Seems they are still going good. Even if Software houses likes the unbreakable ps3 they are supporting, maybe even better xbox. So to be honest i would like my ps3 hacked, homebrew and loader and so on. And i don't think that things will change.

You know is quite funny... When people started to dumping kernel and so on, sony said that we couldn't totally hack ps3 with anything. But now they remove a feature, because they understood that they were wrong...

but the PSN titles varry as much as retail titles, droplitz for instance...

"play a game for 2 hours without losing" is just plain evil, same with the 50 combo multiplier *you basically got to keep chaining till you make your 50th chain without there being a single glitch/error that stops motion... really just YT it it makes more sense*

rockman 10:

beat it on hard/mr. perfect

beat classic/easy complete/normal complete (only like 4 people according to trophy have 1+ of these trophies)

read the storiees of the NES title =3

beat the game without losing all your lifes

just look at some of them =\

call of duty classic:

yu got to beat the game 3 different times for all the trophies and on hardest around 4 shots and you lose

beat the game in 45 mins

I can go on all day, their really no different than any retail title, unless you think bioshock is that much different for instance since you can get all but 27% with relative ease *the last 3 being beat it on ____ difficulty which isnt even hard* or fallout 3, theres nothing hard in fallout 3 XD
