262w ago - Despite some refunds being granted, today Sony UK has officially apologized for the OtherOS removal in the recently released PS3 Firmware 3.21 update citing PS3 piracy concerns as the underlying factor.

To quote from Sony's official statement to Thinq.co.uk (linked above):

"We are sorry if users of Linux or other operating systems are disappointed by our decision to issue a firmware upgrade which when installed disables this operating system feature.

We have made the decision to protect the integrity of the console and whilst mindful of the impact on Linux or other operating system users we nevertheless felt it would be in the best interests of the majority of users to pursue this course of action.

As you will be aware we have upgraded and enhanced functionality and features of the console by numerous firmware upgrades over time and this is a very rare instance where a feature will be disabled. Further enhancements are in the pipeline.

Users do have the choice whether to install the firmware upgrade and this is clearly explained to them at the time the firmware upgrade is made available for installation. Furthermore our terms and conditions clearly state that we have the right to revise the PS3's settings and features in order to prevent access to unauthorised or pirated content."

Yes, I'm also sick of seeing people saying the linux feature was the reason they bought a PS3 over a xblock... really? Before the hypervisor dumps, there was really no reason to have that restricted linux if you were an average ps3 gamer. Even now, if they were to magically restore the feature. Most still wont use it. I seen way too many people complaining it, but now it's gone. People are acting more upset then when they removed the backwards compatibility on the slims...

i like free games its what makes the world go round, I buy lots of games that are exclusives to ps3 but if I want something for free I go back to my 360.

hmm.. interesting... Didn't know it worked on a point basis. Thought higher level trophies actually were weighted more or something. Combine that with the fact that PSN titles are pretty averaged to 12 trophies, that kinda does make it fairly balanced. You did end it nicely

Such a ridiculous statement. A majority of the PS3 community would prefer to not have pirated games available anyway but they have now made it more important for a custom firmware to be publicly released. Hope this doesn't lead to even more cheaters online...

i'm gonna use Rockman as a example, there are 12 trophies this is a fairly average number (comet = 12, hustle = 11, crystal defenders = 12, trashpanic = 13, etc) no matter the trophy amount the points twords the level is still 200 or so, so lets do the math!

60 usd + 51 (its about the average ammount of trophies) + 1,200+ points (ive seen some less and some more, but it seems quite standard)

so lets break it down... the difference between a retail and a stack of PSN games is about 21 trophies, but zero point difference... making the system quite fine indeed... since points in the end are the most important detail and since its all up to the Dev how many trophies the game actually has (2 bronze = 1 silver, and like 5 silver = 1 gold, and like 3 gold = 1 plat) you see the point, since this system is based totally off the points not the number of trophies the system works out fine...

but you can get into endless debates about this... blockbuster had a buy 1 get 1 this week with many games below 14 usd that are newesk... so

brutal legend + ninja gaiden sigma 2 + dead space + bioshock = 20 usd =P which is endlessly more trophies than 2 PSN titles

also you can get into semantics of trading and getting tons of games via that, or that you can sell the 60 usd game for atleast 50 when its newer or trade for a newer title, and all that... like i said if you want to keep going add me on psn but i think i ended it nicely here =3

I dunno... Because of the inadvertent trophy-whor3'ing that I personally have seen, the only way I forsee the trophy system actually being brought back into balance using the system in place now is, to have psn titles worth less than retail games. My reasoning behind that is this: If I buy a 60 dollar game, there's a 50/50 chance (Without really diving into stats) that I will plat it.

If I buy a psn title, while on average they may be harder (Though I have seen -some- psn titles that were pretty easy), I could buy 5 psn titles, now I have 5 chances to get a game that's plat'able. So let's say 1 of the 5s I'll plat, so now not only did I plat one, but I also have 4 other games to squeeze trophies out of, so I'm -really- ahead of the game (no pun intended). If most of the stuff I play is retail based, I have to work FAR harder to reach the same amount of trophies, or be far luckier with trophies that are really, in a practical sense, doable.

Granted that's a simplistic view of it, there's many other factors involved for both sides, but that's the way I see it; the lists I see are basically spammed with bronze and silver trophies. I think rentals should also fall into this category too for the same reason, I just don't know how rentals could be fixed, since those are basically just retails being played at a lower cost.

I think what speaks louder is a player buying a 60 dollar game and squeezing out as many trophies as they can. The solution proposed though is kinda defeats the true purpose of trophies being used as bragging rights though. Since now it's more about preventing trophy spamming via a financial avenue, rather than removing cost out of the whole picture (which I don't know could be done) and awarding based solely on talent.

Which I guess is the way it is now, except there's still that element of spending 50-60 bucks on 5+ psn titles vs. 50-60 bucks on a single title. Which is why I keep going back to the fundamentals of the whole trophy system is really screwed up imho. But I digress from the thread's topic. My apologies.

Also: A late apology like this IMHO has some undertone to it. To me it reads like: "Yea, we realized we messed up, but because we think turning back on something is a discgrace we'll just have to get through this."

piracy sells consoles, here in the arab world people get the 360 not the ps3.
