Rumor: Sony to Remove OtherOS in Next PS3 Firmware Update

Sponsored Links
266w ago - Update: Sony's Geoff Levand has now confirmed, to quote: "SCE is committed to continue the support for previously sold models that have the 'Install Other OS' feature and that this feature will not be disabled in future firmware releases."

According to Owen Stampflee, a Linux Product Manager at Fixstars Corporation, Sony will remove OtherOS in the next PS3 Firmware update due to the recent GeoHot PS3 Hack.

Although this comes as no surprise to PlayStation 3 Slim owners, where OtherOS is already removed, it would contradict Sony's previous statement to standard PS3 owners.

To quote: "Everyone,

I've caught a rumor from a reputable source that the next firmware update for old PS3s will remove the OtherOS feature...

I'm not sure if it's true or not but it's in the best interest of the YDL community to spread the word.

Cheers,
Owen"

While what you say is true, they have not actually done anything illegal of the sorts. The systems entered the United States as computers and were (hypothetically) sold as such. What happens afterward is none of anyone's business. The term computer is also too closely associated with the Personal Computer, and not what the term actually stands for:

comĚputĚer: -noun.
1.Also called processor. an electronic device designed to accept data, perform prescribed mathematical and logical operations at high speed, and display the results of these operations.

The Sony PS3 accomplishes all of these, even the PS3 Slim.

Now unless I missed some clause in the way it is defined by the Trade Commission, ( and I may easily have done so ) Sony again has done nothing wrong.

P.S. Tax evasion does not apply here at all, as it is quite a complex set of codes that delve much deeper than a simple change of OS. AND, we are all guilty of tax evasion: Grandma gives you $100 for your birthday, and since the IRS has no way of tracking this money to you, you do not put it on your tax forms.

kakarotoks, incredible opinion, incredible text.

I do belive this, I pay for what I can, piracy just let me have more of what I would not buy. There are some movies in extreme rare box-sets, but they are easy to find on the internet.

Salˇ from Pasolini Ú a good exemple.

I'll copy your text for further exemples

First off, +Rep to Surfaced and Kakarotoks for their rants Good to see people still show signs of intelligent life out there! Surfaced, while you put up a good argument, I must agree with Kakarotoks here. My case may be a little different however.
In high school I was unfortunately stuck with a Media Arts major (I'm good at it, but it's just not my thing.) We had several computer labs, as I was in a specialized school, and we needed programs to edit images on, make news ones, etc. All the labs were fully equipped with the CS4 suite, and none of it was bought. It was all "pirated" because the costs of equipping a school this size were too high, and we were refused funding (even by alumni who donated)

Did what we do cause Adobe to lose profit? No, because we never would have purchased the software to begin with ( Major had ~550 kids in it ) The only thing we earned was the basic (and some advanced knowledge of how the programs work ( Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and in some cases as mine Fireworks) You can look at the people who decided to pursue this major in college as "undeserving" if you wish (your opinions) but consider the fact that without the software, their portfolios would not have shined, and they might not be exactly where they are today.

It's extremely difficult and improbable (I hate saying impossible) to draw ANY line as to what is considered illegal/ immoral/ you get the point. Why? Because each case is special on it's own. Take one of these kids for example:

If they had not used a pirated program such as PS in school, they may have gotten rejected from college because of their portfolio. Now that they got rejected, they may never make it into the Media business. So, a company that does not hire them does not legally purchase a license to use this product. Adobe comes out at 0.

Now look at the opposite, the kid used this program. They had a beautiful portfolio and went to one of the best schools for Media. They shine and land a great job, and the company purchases the legal license to use this product. Adobe comes out at 0.

All I'm saying is I agree with Kakarotoks, piracy does not ruin industry as many people believe it to do. I am just the same as him, as I'm going to buy something if I deem it worthwhile. And I'm a college student, who works part time construction to make ends meet so money is still tight, but the last factor to prevent me from enjoying myself.

Also, the way corporations function, many try to put limits on the spread of knowledge and freedom (Apple for example as stated.) This is in NO way healthy, as limiting the knowledge people are allowed to soak in is a human rights violation. Governments are just really big corporations ( China and censorship ) and fall under the same category. So while I do agree that all the *corporations don't deserve it* bitching needs to end, I believe that Capitalism is a bad economy, and democracy (in it's ideal form) should replace it.

Just my two cents, I want people to read all the rants/ arguments, and give their own. It opens minds to good debate!

P.S: This forum should have a rant section! Or at least a place to argue viewpoints (in a respective manner of course) Again, much rep. to Kakarotoks and Surfaced!

And what if you record the movie/show and skip the ads when watching it? How about that one person who rented/bought the movie and he's watching it with 10 of his friends? those 10 people didn't pay for it either, right? how is it different from 'piracy' ?

Also, I can tell you that I have watched about 5% of the thousands of movies I downloaded... did I 'pirate' those movies that I never even watched? If I see a movie that I like, I'll go buy it, or watch it in the movie theater, sometimes even 2 or 3 times at the theater, if the movie is worth it..

I do pirate movies, but I don't believe it affects the movie industry because I download movies that I'd never pay to watch, if there was a movie that was worth it, I'd pay for it anyways!

I don't believe piracy is affecting the movie or the game industry that much, so I don't see why people are making such a huge deal out of it!

I enjoyed reading that! We kinda think alike in this matter.

Also for the piracy regarding movies/music: I think those people who try to enforce laws on our asses for downloading movies and music are huge hypocrites.

Didn't they record movies with a VCR back in the day? Or music from the radio via the cassette deck? Sure they did! It was possible, it was easy, and they would've done it on their PC's if the technology would've existed at the time.

Now check this out: In Germany, you need a licence for EVERY DAMNED piece of media you make accessible to public eyes and ears. Yes, that includes singing under the shower with an opened window.

A kindergarten had to pay a fine of 23,- Euro because the little kids sang a christmas song for a bunch of old people. Absolutely ridicolous!

Wow, this is better than the movies. A kid from no-where breaks the PS3 and Sony retaliate with this heavyweight punch. I'm no Dev, and I'm not sure if this move shuts the door completely on us, but it really is good to see Sony on the ropes from what started by one lad and the devs.

Sony has to do something, its their console, but doing this may cause them a lot more trouble than they are anticipating.

Despite how ridiculous it sounds I wouldn't be surprised if Sony cut off their nose to spite their face. This sounds like a classic Sony move.
