February 19, 2010 // 12:00 pm - Update: Sony's Geoff Levand has now confirmed, to quote: "SCE is committed to continue the support for previously sold models that have the 'Install Other OS' feature and that this feature will not be disabled in future firmware releases."

According to Owen Stampflee, a Linux Product Manager at Fixstars Corporation, Sony will remove OtherOS in the next PS3 Firmware update due to the recent GeoHot PS3 Hack.

Although this comes as no surprise to PlayStation 3 Slim owners, where OtherOS is already removed, it would contradict Sony's previous statement to standard PS3 owners.

To quote: "Everyone,

I've caught a rumor from a reputable source that the next firmware update for old PS3s will remove the OtherOS feature...

I'm not sure if it's true or not but it's in the best interest of the YDL community to spread the word.

Why bother removing OtherOS on fat's when slim's dont even support it. If the hack is only possible via linux then surely it'l be a long time until someone figures out how to do the same thing on the slim which has no linux functionality.

The rumor makes no sense at all to me, but thats just my opinion.

This is just a rumor, I think the ps3 fat is more expensive than slim one because of the "other OS" then they can't disable it (I am not sure).

I guess that if they truly remove the OS feature, we will start thinking more seriously about the good-old custom firmware.

Also for the piracy regarding movies/music: I think those people who try to enforce laws on our asses for downloading movies and music are huge hypocrites.

Didn't they record movies with a VCR back in the day? Or music from the radio via the cassette deck? Sure they did! It was possible, it was easy, and they would've done it on their PC's if the technology would've existed at the time.[/quote]
Raze1988: hehe, thanks, yep, huge hypocrites! they just need some new scapegoat to answer the big bosses as to why they didn't sell that good... I think the money they're wasting on their anti-piracy efforts is more than their losses caused by piracy

First off, +Rep to Surfaced and Kakarotoks for their rants Good to see people still show signs of intelligent life out there! Surfaced, while you put up a good argument, I must agree with Kakarotoks here. My case may be a little different however.

Just my two cents, I want people to read all the rants/ arguments, and give their own. It opens minds to good debate!

P.S: This forum should have a rant section! Or at least a place to argue viewpoints (in a respective manner of course) Again, much rep. to Kakarotoks and Surfaced!

haha, thanks I liked your story.. yes, it's definitely true, the student can't buy the license, but let him use your app and once he gets a job and stops being broke, he will surely end up buying your product!

I'm not sure about having a rant section.. problem is, you'll quickly get flamewars, or people saying stupidities because they don't have anything better to say!

I do belive this, I pay for what I can, piracy just let me have more of what I would not buy. There are some movies in extreme rare box-sets, but they are easy to find on the internet.

Saló from Pasolini é a good exemple.

I'll copy your text for further exemples

Thanks That's true, you reminded me of how they keep saying that using a ROM on some old emulator or whatever is considered stealing.. problem is, they don't sell those anymore, so whether you buy it or you (literally) steal it, the company that made the game isn't getting a cent out of it, so why would they care! If you took a material object (the cardridge), then yes it's stealing, but when it's just digital data that costs absolutely nothing to anyone to copy... I don't condone piracy.. but.. I'm just saying..

I buy what I feel is worth the money (I've bought a ton of games over the years), and I buy when I have extra money to do it. If I don't have extra money, and I'm able to say, download a movie I think might be good but not sure of, I'll do it. If it's amazing I'll probably buy it, if it sux then I won't.

I just don't understand why I should be obligated to support companies that put out garbage games/movies. It just encourages them to pump more of them out, and flood the market with crap.

I definitely agree. I've downloaded about 100 games for the PSP, I tried maybe 10 of them for about 5 minutes each, then used my PSP for watching video for a few weeks, and never used it again... The 'piracy problem' of the PSP isn't the piracy, it's simply that the games that are available for the PSP are all just crap and un-entertaining, so people prefer to pirate them for their 5 minutes of gameplay rather than buy them!

(actually, the only games I played and enjoyed are loco roco, patapon and god of war.. which were ironically borrowed from a friend who had the games, but I'd definitely pay for those, but for nothing else).

But yes, that's the thing, I took the example of the PSP because it's very obvious... but the same happens for the PS3 too... look here at my list of owned games (the 'KaKaRoTo' part) :

You can see how many crappy games I ended up buying... If you don't see a 'Finished' in the comment, then that's one game that maybe I shouldn't have bought.. you can also see all the 'never played' games (but still bought them). And unfortunately, I'm contributing to having those companies put out crappy games..

Think of Cuboid.. paying 10$ for a 100% copy of a 100% legally free flash game available on many websites ? Or 10$ for Mahjong Tales which is almost the same as the one that comes preinstalled with windows (Yes, CreatStudios seem to be the worst at that at the moment) ?

The problem is that those developers who work 90hours a week and barely see their families in order to get the game ready and meet the requirements and the impossible deadlines, etc.. aren't getting a cent from the sales, they only get their salary! Yes obviously the annual bonus they'll get will depend on the sales, but it's not always like that. Not every company gives out bonuses...

Also for example The Saboteur, the game went out and the company (pandemic studios) was closed.. their developers aren't getting anything.. worse, they just lost their jobs! So I don't really see the point in helping out that distributor (EA) who got rid of all the developers and who's getting rich on their hard work.. That game was actually the first I ever considered renting (I don't like renting because it doesn't help the developers, but also 'cause I kind of like collecting the games I play). I never actually got time to try it.. maybe some day.. after the Heavy Rain/God of war 3/FF XIII, fever that's coming in the next few weeks

I don't believe piracy is affecting the movie or the game industry that much, so I don't see why people are making such a huge deal out of it!

I completely agree, if you look at the figures for the entertainment industry over the past couple of years, they've taken less of a hit during this economic downturn than most, in fact they've seen growth. The reason for this is people need a release, an escape, now more than ever. There's no doubt that there doing very well for themselves even with people pirating.

If anything, piracy helps the exposure of the entertainment scene as a whole, and makes it bigger, ultimately making it more profitable. As gaming becomes more and more main stream (as it has since it was first invented) there should be less concern over piracy.

I realize that games cost what the do as a way for developers to cover their ass, (and ultimately make a profit) as there taking a big risk (development $, advertising $, production $) putting a game out there that might not be received well. As for them removing other os, if it is true, as someone else stated, there is always another way, whether it be a software flaw or a modchip. It will always be cat and mouse between hackers and developers, just as it always has been. People are driven to hack things even if it seems unlikely to come to fruition.
