November 4, 2010 // 7:11 pm - Today (linked above) reports that a Rep revealed Sony's PS3 backwards compatibility plans to them at a recent press event.

While they didn't reveal their informant's name, a few months ago a patent for an adapter to make PS3 backwards compatible was uncovered.

To quote: "It was clear from our conversation that Sony likes the idea of backwards compatibility, but hadn't come to a conclusion until recently, on how to incorporate it.

The decision Sony finally came to is the one already in play, HD remastering.

"Remastering didn't come up until about two years ago. For a developer, remastering in HD took a moderate amount of time and effort to achieve, and with the right title it could be very successful. Once we noticed the benefits of HD remastering, the decision was made to use God of War 1 & 2 as the test for the market, and they delivered.

The God of War Collection had reached almost a million copies sold just after the holiday. Shortly aftter that Activision, EA, UbiSoft, Konami, and SquareEnix were all on board to issue ReMastered Edition of their best Playstation 2 Games."

He went on to say doing backwards compatibility through HD remastering is best for gamers, developers, and the PlayStation 3.

Gamers get to enjoy their favorite games in HD, with trophy support, remastered games fall under the licensing for the PlayStation 3 and are considered a PS3 title, and developers can reap a return on games they develop years ago.

Be prepared to play your favorite PlayStation 2 classics in Stereoscopic 3D, HD, and in digital 7.1 surround sound."

This was $ony's plan all along; to re-sell you games less than 5 years old for close to full price with minimal improvements. It's the entire reason why they yanked software backwards compatibility.

The thing is that I am ok with re-releases, so long as there is enough new content to justify a purchase. For example, Nintendo re-released the Gamecube Mario Tennis and Donkey Kong Jungle Beat with new controls without yanking BC from the Wii, and they sold fairly well. The MegaMan anniversary collection is another example which did well even though it was a collection of PS1 games on PS2. $ony could have had both backwards compatibility and re-releases, but they are too greedy and don't care even a little about their customers. As a result only a few re-releases will exist for the most popular titles, and the best PS2 games will never see a PS3 release.

But there is a silver lining. I discovered a few weeks ago that PCSX2 now plays PS2 games perfectly at full speed in HD with surround sound on a mid grade PC. This is what I was waiting for 5+ years for the PS3 to accomplish. $ony can take their DRM infested, bug riddled, unreliable hardware and shove it.

I'm sorry but rewriting a game doesn't constitude as backward compatible.. so it's up to the community to show Sony how to do it by writing it's own PS2 emulator.. WITH decend HD upscaling..

Well this is exactly what I would expect Sony to do. Use the phrase backwards Compatibility while asking you to buy your "remastered" and "favorite" games again

As far as I'm aware, the only differences between a wii and a gamecube is the wireless support and a whopping 244Mhz extra in the processor, and 81Mhz in gpu. It's like playing vista games on windows 7. Not a big change to have to overcome.

I agree though, that $ony with all it's big sue-everyone money should be able to develop an emulator.. and make it free to use. Well, now that I think of it, they are probably running out of money by this point with lawyer's fees and need to 'squeeze blood out of a turnip' so to speak.

With The space of bluray I hope they do take a cue from sly cooper and do like three games per disc, then it'll definitely be worth the money. I could care less about Trophys but HD classic = win in my book

Will be an easy job for SE..

A fair few of their PS2 games were done in 1280 x 720 but were compressed to smaller resolutions (There are some pics of FF12 running at 720p & apart from the gui the graphics look good)

I own FFX and FFX2, is it legal for me to download the international edition? If I can't do that, then can I modify my FFX bin/cue to have the international options? If not I can only import it, or wait for re-mastered edition?

Otherwise, Final Fantasy X International undubbed on HD Loader PS2 FTW. Playing through Final Fantasy X with the English dub is like listening to nails on a chalkboard.
