November 4, 2010 // 7:11 pm - Today (linked above) reports that a Rep revealed Sony's PS3 backwards compatibility plans to them at a recent press event.

While they didn't reveal their informant's name, a few months ago a patent for an adapter to make PS3 backwards compatible was uncovered.

To quote: "It was clear from our conversation that Sony likes the idea of backwards compatibility, but hadn't come to a conclusion until recently, on how to incorporate it.

The decision Sony finally came to is the one already in play, HD remastering.

"Remastering didn't come up until about two years ago. For a developer, remastering in HD took a moderate amount of time and effort to achieve, and with the right title it could be very successful. Once we noticed the benefits of HD remastering, the decision was made to use God of War 1 & 2 as the test for the market, and they delivered.

The God of War Collection had reached almost a million copies sold just after the holiday. Shortly aftter that Activision, EA, UbiSoft, Konami, and SquareEnix were all on board to issue ReMastered Edition of their best Playstation 2 Games."

He went on to say doing backwards compatibility through HD remastering is best for gamers, developers, and the PlayStation 3.

Gamers get to enjoy their favorite games in HD, with trophy support, remastered games fall under the licensing for the PlayStation 3 and are considered a PS3 title, and developers can reap a return on games they develop years ago.

Be prepared to play your favorite PlayStation 2 classics in Stereoscopic 3D, HD, and in digital 7.1 surround sound."

The truth is that "backwards compatability" is non-existing. Can't put a remastered game into a ps2 that is for sure.

I don't mind remastering games tho as long as Sony stick to just a few of the good ones. I remember how happy i was when they re-released pc Monkey Island games in a remastered CHEAP edition. I did see the God of war collection and the price made me angry. I already own those game and put down good money for those already once. I realise its a "collection" of games but that is just a excuse. A REAL collection of games you can only get on pc and it includes a good dozen games at least.

I own a LOT of original ps2 (and ps1 too) games. If i stack em they reach the roof (actually you shouldnt stack em that high as the cases cant handle that, i tried). Anyways, id be really unhappy if Sony & co starts mass re-releasing ALL their games remastered for ps3 at full price. These arnt new game, so treat them like so and sell them at according budget prices at least.

in my opinion it looks as if Wii is following suit with getting rid of BC, what else would be the reason for re-releasing GC games on the in Wii format with Wii controller support.

Absolutely agree - it'll be the homebrew community that ultimately gets the PS2 BC back, though I think HD upscaling might be asking for a bit much from an emulator. I gotta imagine the PS3's hardware is capable of running a descent PS2 emulator (so says the guy with no programming ability).

Re-issues is a great idea, but I don't really think that qualifies as BC, because you will not be able to put the re-issue into your PS2 and play it.

Agree 100% It better not be the full price of the req PS3 game, even though I just know sony will ask the full price. But I really think if there gonna do what they pulled with the God of war collection for the ps3 then they need to bring the price down( or at least add some extra content)

But for some, like this leaked photo:

I'll for sure pay full price

PS3 is my first ever console so I like this idea. I liked what they did to GOW collection so I'll support this move. I get to play the classic games that I never played.

Trophy support and HD graphics is pretty cool... I wouldn't mind paying $20-30 per title, any more and it'd just be pushing it.

I'm quite sure IF we ever got PS2 emulation, they wouldn't have trophy support... Or would they?

Sure, people will say "Oh, but trophies don't even matter!" Well, I'm one of the people who actually enjoys getting trophies. It makes the game just a little bit more enjoyable, and actually gives me a bit more incentive to go out of my way and do extra stuff

Why not. If the Games stay cheap, than it is okay.

Resi-Remakes from Cube, were nice Games... and GOW1+2 is nice also.
