November 8, 2008 // 10:05 pm - Game installs on the PlayStation 3 have become a huge problem. We've seen hard drives fill to capacity already and there looks to be no end in sight.

I was pleasantly surprised when Resistance 2 nixed that huge 5GB install that most games these days require.

This isn't to say there's no install. The game drops roughly 350MB of data onto your hard drive, which takes about 90 seconds. Not bad at all considering games like NBA 09: The Inside use over 2.5GB of precious hard drive space.

I just wanted to give credit where credit is due. Kudos, Insomniac! Good job stepping in and putting a stop (or at least a pause) the problematic game installs that are plaguing the PS3. Keep up the good work!

Resistance 2: Thanks for Not Using a 5GB HDD Install, 350MB Only

Well if you don't have any space available on your hdd you can delete some other game files from games that you are not playing at the moment.

I think the small size of the HDD installs show how much more optimized the PS3 is becoming.

I can see the PS3 version of multi-platform games to be better in quality than other versions of the game on other consoles.

Imagine games on the PS3 in three years. I remember Timesplitters I when I got the PS2 a couple of months after and now I just finished playing God of War II. Wow, just wow.

That takes extra effort, not just stuffing uncompressed stuff on the HD, and keeping track of what's in memory to make sure you don't need to suddenly pull in huge amounts of stuff. Good on them for going to the trouble. Seems like devs are getting a better handle on developing for the PS3. Hopefully the techniques will make it out to other devs...
