257w ago - This weekend TheSixthAxis.com (linked above) reports that Red Dead Redemption (released on May 18 in North America and May 21 in Europe) requires updating your PlayStation 3 entertainment system to PS3 Firmware 3.21 or higher, which also removes the OtherOS functionality along with the ability to use the PS3 Exploit and likely PS3 Custom Firmware.

However, according to several Forum members (including blood911, Chivafighter and IanJ) it may actually require up to PS3 Firmware 3.30 depending on your region.

Additionally, IanJ also reports that ModNation Racers requires PS3 Firmware 3.21 to play it on Sony's PlayStation 3.

To quote from TSA: "Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption not only requires that particular system software to run, but handily includes it on the disk for easy installation, too.

Chances are there have been other games out since April 1st that required the OtherOS removing firmware update, but Redemption is likely to be one of the higher profile titles to do, and as far as we know this isn't stated on the box at all so consider this a notice if you're still to pick up the game."

The decision is now left to the end users: Update your PS3 console to the latest Firmware to play new titles and game online, or hold out for GeoHot to release his PS3 Custom Firmware with hopes that more PS3 hacks are discovered and new PS3 exploits surface to further unlock the PlayStation 3.

Of course, for those who can afford it, there is another option... simply buy a second PS3 and update it to the latest PlayStation 3 Firmware version while keeping your pre-3.21 FW machine with OtherOS in the closet until it can be put to good use.

Red Dead Redemption Requires PS3 Firmware 3.21 or Higher

You can alway sell one or another down the line - either the new one if the old one would be succesfully hacked, or even old one with pre 3.21 fw as there will be still increasing demand for those as they will be slowly "eliminated" by Sony. You can even decide to sell it now with some small profit after purchasing let's say new slim

Yeah!! those can be goods reasons but... if we are talking about HACKING , xbox 360 ALREADY can be .

Like said before, this is no surprise. $ony has cleverly handled the whole situation since EgoSnot's supposed hack. They have done all the corrective steps to dissuade devs to hack away on what they perceive as "their system" - even against the odds of class action law suits against them.

And if you sit back and think about it, they seem to have been prepared for this a long time ago - even before the supposed hack. Yet, if you don't upgrade, you have the most beautiful doorstop what can play games prior to 3.21 with OtherOS. And if you do, you have everything except OtherOS... $ony is playing the game and seems to be winning - but there is still hope (but not from EgoSnot).

It requires to have a certain fw version to play, that is not easy to spot before buying a game.. i personally have internet though so i have no problem with the updates.

I use to follow Geohot's work, both his reverse engineering and his robotics, but recently quit. I agree he's pretty much tucked tail and run. To be honest I don't see him ever doing anything else with the PS3 and maybe not even Apple products again. It's a bad idea to wait on him.

Also his custom CFW video as others have stated is easy to emulate by editing unsigned parts of firmware. I wouldn't put it past him to do something like that to keep himself in the spotlight, especially since he's old news now in the Apple scene, other people got tired of his BS there too and went ahead and did a untethered unlock.

All his his 'exploit' has done is destroyed functionality for end-users. Right after he screwed up what we paid money for he decides to retire. That's kind of ass-kicking worthy..

I would like to see the ps3 hacked... you know, homebrew, applications, and all the custom goodies... But I bought my console to play, play online... so I'll be one of those that followed the Homebrew scene... but made the hacking moves late.

All of this is because geo scremed like a child "I've hacked the ps3!" but wait, he didn't.

as far as i know, geohot only needed otheros for getting the key to sign his own pup file containing his own custom firmware. but he was able to update it through a normal restoring over the system itself.

isn't that right?

so that would mean its not important what firmware do you have. the most important thing is that you have a lower firmware, as the custom firmware you wanna upgrade to. o.o

Well - it all depends on the way the (first) CFW would be installed on "virgin" PS3 (aka one with no CFW so far). So far it seems the access to OtherOS (e.g. pre-3.21 FW) might be the only way. It's indeed possible that down the line another way could be found but (similarly as with PSP in the past) the higher with OFW you'll go on your PS3 the lower chances are that you'll be able to install CFW or at least much longer you'd need to wait for exploit to be found.
