February 4, 2009 // 11:22 pm - Another PS3 Media Server update is upon us, and to quote developer ps3mediaserver:

Here's the new version!... some explanations about the new "video copy" feature: in previous versions, you couldn't copy any transcoded videos on your ps3, due to a virtual size of 94gb... now it's possible, with this option enabled.

Be careful: if you want to use that feature, it's recommended to set a reasonable bandwidth limit in transcode options, because transcoded videos will have no fixed size, and you could fill up your ps3's hard drive pretty quickly with default settings !

Is anybody else running this on ubuntu? I am having problems running the script. I think jre is fully installed as java works on web pages. However the script keeps opening in editor or if I open direct from firefox it tries to resave it.

I am a relative noob to Linux so might be missing something obvious!

PMS will transcode DTS TO AC3 or PCM on the fly.

But PS3 still can't play DTS natively unless its using the AVCHD method on an USB drive.

I've got a slower CPU on my server ie. XP2000+. If I wanted to watch an MKV could I go into the transcode menu, play the MKV and let the "buffer" fill up? Ie. does the transcoding only happen on the fly, or does it buffer (like youtube)?

Can anybody comment on how good the file management is compared to Twonky and Mediatomb?

My recently built NAS with XP runs this beautifully. Once it connects, it shows your shared folder with its heirchy, but with extra ##TRANSCODE## folders. With in that is a folder named after every file in the parent directory, and within that, are different streaming files

Hope that helps.

You can stream directly mkv files from your laptop to your PS3 without conversions and movie goes reaaaally smooth . Just to mention here, use a ethernet connection instead of wireless unless you have a superb machine and connection.
