Netflix - surely you can just browse to netflix site in the PS3 browser? I don't have a netflix account so haven't tried it. (It *might* be possible to stream netflix stuff via PS3MediaServer with a plugin, but you'd have to have a look on their forums)

PS3MediaServer is for streaming media files from your PC/network to the PS3 in a format that the PS3 can play. e.g. You have .divx/.xvid/.avi/.mkv/.mpg/.mpeg/other video files on your PC, these can be steamed to the PS3 with on-the-fly transcoding to a format the ps3 can play (if ps3 supports the format, they are streamed directly with no transcoding).

So for example, you have a large collection of (owned!!) DVD's which you've ripped to video files on your pc, you also have some (copyright free!!) downloaded video's on your PC - you can setup your PC with PS3MediaServer and then browse your video's via the PS3's "Video" menu. (also works for MP3's and Photos!)

It can be a little bit of a pain to get configured, but once setup correctly it works very well - i use it with my network storage server to serve all my home movies, family pics etc. I can browse them on my PS3, Android phone, bravia TV in the lounge, Other tv in the bedroom, laptop etc

It's a DNLA server (have a look on wikipedia or just google it). Hope this helps?!

if you use it with showtime 3.0 you dont even have to use the on the fly reencoding (nor any other remuxxing etc) of the ps3 media server as it streams mkv directly... its not yet perfect thought... 720p playback works quite well, 1080p starts to stutter where it does not when transcoding mkv for the "normal" xmb media server playback.. i found a renderer conf working for me... over here: ps3mediaserver.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=11424

p.s. thanks to sportsstar99 for that... and btw the reason it stutters at 1080p is that (at least showtime shows that status) the cpu is too slow... dunno how that could be since untouched stuff runs just fine but im not that deep into that kinda stuff

Today PS3 Media Server 1.30.1 is released, which fixes an iTunes library bug among the changes:

Download: PS3 Media Server 1.30.1 (Windows) / PS3 Media Server 1.30.1 (Linux) / PS3 Media Server 1.30.1 (Mac)

Changelog 1.30.1:

  • Fixed bug that caused very slow iTunes library parsing

Changelog 1.30.0:

  • Backwards-incompatible API changes (for plugin developers/packagers) - see ps3mediaserver.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=11283 for more details
  • Updated OS X binaries (FFmpeg, MEncoder and MPlayer) to fix an AC3 bug and improve internal VOBsub display quality
  • Optional GUI to allow profile to be selected when PMS starts
  • Better UPnP spec compliance
  • Logging improvements
  • ASS/SSA subtitles disabled by default on Linux and OS X
  • Multithreaded MEncoder enabled by default on multithreaded CPUs
  • Subtitles stay within confines of original frame when using overscan compensation
  • Made transcoding tab resizing consistent for all sizes
  • Fixed DTS audio support with FFmpeg
  • MEncoder supports DTS-ES (6.1 channels) audio
  • Handles unknown audio channels
  • Change maximum number of plugins to 30 from 4
  • Improved MP4 support
  • New Korean translation (thanks, mrahn80)
  • Fixed bug where config sometimes wouldn't save on Windows 7

Upgrade Notes:

For 1.23.0 and above:

  • Just uninstall the older version and install newer one

For versions prior to 1.23.0:

  • To retain your old settings you may have to copy your old config file/s to a new directory.
  • To find out where the new directory is on your computer, run the program and go to the Traces tab and look on the 14th line, the line that says "Profile directory:", that is the folder your config files should be saved now.
  • If you use the "media library / cache" option you should reset it.
