March 28, 2010 // 6:13 pm - Today Sony's Sr. Director of Corporate Communications & Social Media Patrick Seybold has confirmed that PS3 Firmware update 3.21 is coming on April 1, 2010 and will disable the OtherOS feature!

To quote: The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the "Install Other OS" feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009.

This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.

In addition, disabling the "Other OS" feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.

Consumers and organizations that currently use the "Other OS" feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;

• Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
• Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
• Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
• Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later

For those PS3 users who are currently using the "Other OS" feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the "Other OS," as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

Additional information about PS3 firmware updates, including v3.21 (once it becomes available), can be found here:

Does this really surprise ANY of you? You find a hole on a $inking $hip, and what do you do? you PATCH it.

Now, although i don't like the fact that they're taking the option out (which they advertised as a feature), I dont disagree with it. My thinking is, that $ony found this hole 2 years ago when they started developing the Slim, and they fixed it.

we ALL need to stand up with a unified voice, and tell $ony to 'give us what we paid for, or give us our money back'

Going down to the local Wally-World with my 2yr old box and asking for a replacement or a refund because of this will get my ass laughed out of the province.

Oh WTF?? I can't believe this You have got to be kidding. Lets see I paid 600 for a console that had ps2 BC, 4 usb ports, card readers and the otherOS option. If my ps3 breaks down here in Portugal and I send it to sony, I will no longer get my ps2 with BC back from them. instead I will get a newer model. I can confirm this is true because it happened to my nephew and a few other people I know.

Now they decide to take the otherOS away to?? I say again WTF!!! I'm really glad I was an early adopter Nice job Sony.
Well the only good sign I can see is that there is a real big security risk with GeoHots exploit. Maybe now he'll be a little bit more open with his info so we can actually make some use of his exploit instaed of just losing the other OS in consequence of what he did.

Damn, I just woke up and this is the 1st news I see. It's a good thing no Sony rep is around me because I'm seeing blood.
Thank God God of War and Heavy Rain don't need a FW update. those might be the last games I get.

Sorry for the rant but i didn't really believe they could take away a feaure I had paid for. WTF?

I don't think anyone is bashing Egohot because of that move Sony is making. The nickname that I use for him is rather about his "I'm too clever for you" attitude toward almost everyone.

It would be stupid to hold a grudge on him because he found a way to hack the Ps3 doesn't it? Sony's move is logical, they have to protect their interests...even if it seems too late to me ^^

i don't think it's a problem because this system will be hacked one day with this way or another.

i honestly think its sad, on these same boards people were praising the "Ipod God", now he's depicted as a clown. come on guys, damn the kid cant win for losing. once we thought he gave us the key to unlock the ps3 it was "geohot's the man", now that Sony has taken action to stop "the man", now he's "Egohot"!

the boy's been a prick since Day 1. I've read his smug posts & "greater that thou" remarks, & i'm just laughing, not because Sony screwed us, but because it simply goes to show why the Devs are so hush-hush about things.

next time stick with the home team, Cjpc hasn't lead us wrong. hell he's here everyday making our end user experience marvelous. so, no don't blame George for our own impatience, just slap the guy in the mirror for begging for a "glory hog" to inform the world that he half ass hacked the ps3, and get sony to tighten the knot around your neck.

lol.... " Where's your ipod god now"?!?!

I think this is a disgusting move from Sony by disabling the OtherOS.

Similar scenario with the Xbox 360 - If you don't have the latest 8955 Dash/Kernel you can't play Modern Warfare 2 OR sign into Xbox Live.

Me personally, Sony can stick the update where the sun don't shine. I RARELY buy PS3 games (£40+ haha) and only rent the odd 1 or 2. I'm keeping my old firmware (2.70) and OtherOS thankyou.

Who knows? 12 month's time we could have a wide-open hacked system.

That's an interesting move on Sony's part but not necessarily unexpected considering recent events. People can bash geohot for it, but let's face it... that can is already open and this seems to be confirmation direct from Sony that his hack has the potential to turn the PS3 into an open platform.

In my opinion, this is just a game of chess. Sony has made their move and while it might seem to give them the edge, I think it's going to hurt them in the long run.

First of all, closing the door on Linux support adds fuel to the fire. They lose support from those whole felt Other OS was an acceptable homebrew platform. Potentially this adds more talent and minds to the hacking effort.

Secondly, for the forseeable future there will be a practically unlimited supply of hackable used PS3s. Any enterprising hacker can aquire one of these and start poking around for holes in pre-3.21 firmware. When one is found there is a reasonable probability that the same hole will exist post-3.21.

No matter what happens, the game will continue so long as the PS3 is a current platform.

is there a way to use the ps3 with linux and skip the update? i'm really hoping for geohot to release a full hack that can remove this or block this!

If the PS3 ends up in the same shape as the PSP it will be possible. But who knows if and when that will be.
