March 28, 2010 // 6:13 pm - Today Sony's Sr. Director of Corporate Communications & Social Media Patrick Seybold has confirmed that PS3 Firmware update 3.21 is coming on April 1, 2010 and will disable the OtherOS feature!

To quote: The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the "Install Other OS" feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009.

This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.

In addition, disabling the "Other OS" feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.

Consumers and organizations that currently use the "Other OS" feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;

• Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
• Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
• Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
• Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later

For those PS3 users who are currently using the "Other OS" feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the "Other OS," as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

When I saw the headline for this, I really thought it was an April Fool's joke.

Legally I doubt there's anything anyone can do about this. Sony's TOS gives them the right to do this. You are not being forced to update. As many on here keep bragging, "I refuse to update!" That's your right. So there's no legal grounds to stand on. You get to keep your "advertised feature" by not updating. The most anyone could do legally is demand your money back for the PS3. It still won't stop Sony from doing this update.

However, this is a real dick move by Sony to cover a security hole. It does show that people are on the right track to fully opening up the PS3 if Sony is this worried about it.

To me, the ultimate hack would come in the form of custom firmware, and as the end user, I doubt you'll need linux for this. The PS3 has the option for updating your fimware via USB device. I would think that would suffice for any real hacks in the future.

The devs/scenes that work on this obviously won't be updating and will continue on with their work. Many devs have stated many times they work on older firmware. This doesn't effect them, so I'm not too worried about this update.

This FW is also supposed to enable 3D on the ps3... So ppl who want 3D would have to sacrifice otheros... And that sucks big time... I'm not for the 3D... First gotta buy a 3DTV which won't be anywhere in the near future... So i ain't updating...

Oh boy, CodecSys is going to have its hands full:

Remember the OtherOS H264 encoder? People who bought this, yet also want to use their PS3 as a gaming machine are going to be flaming pissed. Especially considering the price.

That may work for some systems. The original launch models, AFAIK, have dual NAND, and as such the firmware is on the NAND. I know this is not the case with newer models.

For example: with a launch 60gb with EE/GS, if you upgrade the hard drive, nothing happens, the system goes on like normal (firmware on NAND).

If you do the same with a slim, or PHAT non-PS2 40gb, it will go into bootloader recovery mode and ask you to provide an PS3UPDAT.PUP from an external source (CD/USB/ECT), although sadly if I recall, it does store the version number in the NAND, and as such, will not accept a PS3UPDAT.PUP that is < the previously flashed version from the removed hard drive.

No thanks. This update is useless and I don't care about 3D. I will stay with the older firmware for hacking.

Sony, I am sorry but you are selfish!

Guys, Correct me if i wrong, if we update, can't any person with pre update post the whole dump of their hd for others to simply writeover their updated one? System relies on the hd dosnt it? or it writes in to system memory (which is the initial problem?) This can even go as far back as pre 2.00 etc...?

If my theory is supported, then we can get a blank hd and update the new one, keep the old hd for future if or when ps3 gets really opened up.

Well, that sucks hard.

How dare they remove a feature, just because they made a mistake and don't know how to fix it? I'm pissed about it, but I don't think it really matters for normal users.

If there will be a CFW sometime, I'm sure we don't need to use OtherOS for using it.

well i don't think this is possible, because me and some million users have payed 660euros to have the complete thing.
i don't think that they can take back something that we have payed for.

Currently I still use PSN with the old dns redirect trick still works for logging into the store etc. But i`m on 3.10. Maybe they will do something to kill that

Hopefully something good will come of the exploit and then the otheros, maybe reenabled if we ever get to custom fw or a good old homebrew type linux.

can't we sue?, I mean they are removing something we bought? Too late $ony those who already are hacking it will discover a way to do it now whether you like it or not, because those slims out there are lookin juicy for hackin now, especially as your 60 gigs yellow light eventually anyway...
