March 28, 2010 // 8:13 pm - Today Sony's Sr. Director of Corporate Communications & Social Media Patrick Seybold has confirmed that PS3 Firmware update 3.21 is coming on April 1, 2010 and will disable the OtherOS feature!

To quote: The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the "Install Other OS" feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009.

This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.

In addition, disabling the "Other OS" feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.

Consumers and organizations that currently use the "Other OS" feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;

• Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
• Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
• Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
• Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later

For those PS3 users who are currently using the "Other OS" feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the "Other OS," as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

This is bull. I bought PS3 phat specifically for this feature and now they are going to take it away. Nothing like punishing the mass's for the actions of a few.

I was a bit distant before when it came to hacking, but now i really hope the PS3 gets hacked wide open asap. I want linux back, and since Sony decided to get Scrooge on us, i want free PS3 games too. I was happy with just linux...but now i want Sony to lose money, because thats the only way they will understand their that their negative actions impact their customers.

I can't wait until Geoff Keighley has a Sony Rep on his show and says: "It does everything, except Linux. Right?"

want to know something? i agree that while even though they have the rights to change whatever, there will be lawsuits, and they will lose. why? because when they advertised the ps3 to begin with, they stated it wanted people to lookat it as a multi-media machine, that ALSO plays games. making it seem like a console only after "it does everything" else. so, if people only bought it for the reason that it can play blu ray movies and also become a pc, well then by removing this feature, they are robbing those people. and lawsuits will be won.

Ps3 was advertised with "other os" , it's against law to sweep such feature who was advertised. That's the Truth in Germany! :-)

The PS3 is a game system. Anything else it does is optional. The update does not stop the PS3 from being a game system. Legally, Sony is covered in this.

Sony could do a firmware update tomorrow that made it so the PS3 simply turns on and off and plays games, and there still would be nothing legal you could do about it, other than demand your money back for the system.

Those are the facts. If you don't like it, then sorry truth hurts you.

Actually, the PS3 was classified as a computer so that Sony could import/export it cheaper, so removing this option can be deemed a functionality of the product. but im no lawyer so i can't be %100 on that.

hehe "Functionality" means capable of playing the newest Games! But without update for "other os" feature no new games.
"Other OS" can be a reason for buy a ps3, like video encoding, programming. In the manual there was ne possibility to disable such a feature!

You're "dynamic themes" reason is ridiculous, because this feature wasn't necessary for customers to buy this product at the beginning. And improving a product is not a infringement!

Ah, but here's the rub. Define the difference between "functionality" and a "feature".

The install other os is a "feature" of the PS3. It's "functionality" is a game system, which it still does after the update.

According to your logic, adding the ability of using dynamic themes would be an infringement. I haven't seen anyone sue Sony over this?

I'm in no way, shape, or form trying to defend Sony for this. I personally feel like it's a really dick thing to do to it's consumers. I'm simply stating that there's not much legally you can do about it other than get your money back for buying the system.

It still won't stop Sony from doing this update.
