December 2, 2009 // 12:40 am - Several months ago Ifcaro released his PS3 USBLD Loader Source Code and a USBAdvn Patcher followed by PS3 Open USBLD v0.41.

Since then, the project evolved to what is now known as Open PS2 Loader for PS3... with the latest version 0.5 available below complete with source code.

Download: Open PS2 Loader v0.5 for PS3 / Open PS2 Loader v0.5 Source Code

Changelog v0.5:

• Added compatibility modes
• isofs/cdvdman now use disc type
• cdvdman now has streams
• Added game loading through network
• Static interface available
• Added language support
• It works in PS3 with PS2 emulation by software

From the ReadMe File:

Open PS2 Loader is a 100% Open source game loader compatible with USB Advance/Extreme game format. It's more compatible and it should work without ps2load or change DNASXXX.IMG tricks.

Open PS2 Loader also is developed continuously and anyone can contribute improvements to the project.

The main objective is to support both the PS2 and the PS3 with backward compatibility.

How to use:

First, you need an USB device compatible with PS2/PS3 formatted in FAT32 (only if you want to load games from USB). For loading games by SMB protocol you need to share a folder called PS2SMB (it can be changed) make sure that it has permissions for anyone to access.

The games have to be in USB Advance/Extreme format. There are some programs for converting games to this format. Open PS2 Loader includes an command line tool for that purpose called iso2usbld.

In PS2 you can use any of the existing methods for loading an executable elf.

In PS3 you need to have an original SwapMagic 3.6+ or 3.8 (at the moment there aren't any other option).

The steps for loading Open PS2 Loader in a PS3 are:

1. Rename OpenPS2LD.ELF to SMBOOT0.ELF
2. Make a folder in root of USB device called SWAPMAGIC and copy SMBOOT0.ELF to it.
3. Launch SwapMagic in PS3 and press UP+L1 then Open PS2 Loader should start.

There are 4 forms for launching elfs in SwapMagic:

Finally, you must have a PS3 console that supports loading PS2 game images... this means it must be a non-Slim PlayStation 3 model with (4) USB ports or else you cannot use this application at the present time.

Open PS2 Loader v0.5 for PS3 with Source Code is Now Available

It's answered in countless threads so you obviously didn't search (-Rep), but to answer: yes, you need an original pressed Swap Magic disc.

Indeed.. I can't believe you don't have any still collecting dust from the PS2 days hehe I must have about 6 different updates of it here from like version 2.0 to 3.8.

I suppose if you are still in doubt of the time-tested rule, you could always give it a try though and report back.

Actually there has been an alpha shared among a select few users that does load ps1 games via network or internal IDE. ffgriever is the one who is writing that. dlanor is the only one I know of with the alpha. (and he won't distribute the binary or sources without permission from ffgriever).

One draw back that I have heard of is that there is no GUI right now. The program is manipulated via arguments input from the user via PS2Link. News on that program is received in between long gaps. Also, to the best of my knowledge, it has never been tested on a PS3.

This is the first news I read on this site, after almost a year or two following it that looks like a real homebrew.

You know a software.. with face.. working.. a lot of people. And open code is great! I think the scene has only to win this.

PS3 is getting it's baby steps, little by little..

It has nothing to do with the OtherOS function. Basically, it's a PS2 app, working on a Ps2-backward-compatible Ps3.

To use it, you need a Ps2 (or a Ps3 capable of reading Ps2 disks) and Swap magic. Easy to understand, isn't it? Please dudes, do a little search before asking such questions, this is getting ridiculous.
